But can anyone advise me about any schools located in the State of New Jersey that teaches Silat and/or Kuntao? I cannot find a school in the usual directories. In addition, can anyone recommend a good school that they would train with? Thank you for your attention to this matter. ------------------------------ From: "Strider" Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 10:07:00 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inaya towern_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #378 hello to the list, maybe someone can enlighten me on this, I was reading one of the MA mags at tower books, and there was a huge ad in there for a "secrets of an undefeated pit fighter" he claims to be the best in the world etc, and offers a video of course, how else can you retire from MA? anyone know this guy and what he's all about? ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 10:09:07 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Whoops! As I reread this passage this morning, it occurs to me that it might be misunderstood to say that I am calling Matt and his crew "brawling idiots". NOT MY INTENDED MEANING!!! Actually when I wrote this I was just trying to self-deprecatingly refer to how some people from time to time see the Dog Brothers. Matt is a thinking guy who is generating some very capable people and I've enjoyed rolling with the ones I've met when they visit the Machados. Sorry for the lack of clarity in the original. Again, according to Tony, they bashed him around so severely that he was covered with bruises, and then he basically told them he wanted to immediately learn their style, because he couldn't deal with them with what he had! Is that a comment on the skills of Mark Wiley, the effectiveness of serrada or the normal boasting of one style vs. another? I don't know. I just throw it out there for everyone to think about. By the way, I don't know anything about serrada, nor have I ever studied Kali Illustrisimo- I have no opinion either way! >> I doesn't sound like anything that has any definite meaning. It doesn't tell me much about his skill.....He fought a group of other good fighters, one after another, half way around the world in their country, and afterwards has bumps and bruises..what a shocker !!! He's there to get info for a book, these guys he fought with, are some of his contacts, so he tells them their style is really good.. Wow another surprise. Mark can defiantly use his style to fight, but it would not make sense to judge his system by the circumstances described. Tony Diego supposedly repeats this story, as if it means something...normal boasting of one style vs. another?........Sounds like it. I, myself do feel a little between. I understand how one must apply what he practices to fully understand the essence of it. I also see that, yes, you can have a good eye and be able to make points to other people. It does take the "ba**s" to do it. We all begin our training group saying, "I was thinking about this, what do you think?" and, "it could work, but why not do it like this", and, "I think this would work better", and then, "yea, it's easier said than done", and then," well let's try it", then, "Oh yeah, I see how that works now", or "man, I walked into that, maybe like this.",etc. Sometimes, it's just "balls to the wall". Many useful points. Thanks to all for the very intelligent post and thread on the topic. I have learned from it. Another thing that is always in mind is that, sometimes life gives you the option of going this way(which seems to be Matt's point) or another way(more to a traditional system), and I would say that it seems alot of us here on the digest(fighters included)agree that it lies somewhere in the middle. the trouble is finding where in the middle does it lie for you. Even as much as we are in control of what we percieve as the truth for ourselves, we must acknowledge the truth of being, in which we don't have much control of. Meaning that we don't have control of how our opponent attacks us, but we have control on how we train ourselves to react. Sometimes in looking for our balance, we will tend to walk to either side and see whats there so that we may walk back into the middle. Some people obviously stay on their own respective side, and for those that choose to stay in the middle, sometimes we pull more to one side, sometimes more to the other. No way as way. Crafty, Doc, Jason, Rob, Steve, Stone, MiKe, Ray, did I forget anyone else that wrote on the topic?, excellent post gentlemen, and one that I believe can set example to future post without bickering and squabbling over which way is "CORRECT"(yes, to even which I have done in the past). ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? No, really?" Only to later find out later "self-discovery" and look at it again to see what was meant. Also, anytime any of us start to feeling confident, we just go and see our teacher so he can humble us.
