ANyway I think part of this whole thread has occured bc something was taken out of context. The whole point was that a person can not be a good technician if he is not a good fighter. THink of it in other areas of life. But a good fighter need not be a great technician since other attributes will make up for a lack of tech. The passage made no mention of teachers and fighters (re-read the original quote only the question mentioned it). Matt feels a coach needs to have three qualities, Experience, awarness, responsibility. I know we can all come up with great coachs that never did what they coached, but those people gathered experience other ways. No one discounts that people that are past there fighting prime could still be great coachs just as no one has said that every fighter can be a coach. Let me leave you with this thought, Can anyone say that they would train jits with a guy that could not pull of the techniques in sparring all out. It is also no coincidence that in many pro sports the top coachs played the sport at some competitive level. Before anyone takes this thread further they should just e-mail Matt and ask him straight up. Through an unusual bit of luck, I was able to get a Benchmade folder (not sure what model) 2 5/8" blade. Good sturdy design, nice action, with a thumbhole for one hand opening. I carry this from time to time in place of the Dyad. Unfortunately I ruined the blade slightly when I use it to cut the stock of some veggies, and did not bother to clean the sap off of the blade. It was enough to start a small amount of corrosion, which in turn caused tiny pits to form...I thought it would hold up to sap stains the way my (2nd hand) Gerber Black Bolt (I think an older model of this), the blade of which has held up to moisture and resisted corrosion rather well over ten years (perhaps more)... On the Malong/Sarong thing: I stand corrected...my friend (who lived in the southern Phil. for a number of years) tells me that the malong is worn by the Muslim menfolk from time to time also... An easy way to tie the malong (which is like a tube of cloth) is to pull it up chest-high, grab either end, draw the ends together over the right or left shoulder and tie with a simple knot... I'll try to find out the other (functional) ways to tie off the malong if you're interested... tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: GatPuno@aol.com Date: Sat, 5 Aug 2000 13:17:40 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #379 You know sometime is better to listen than to answer and be part of the conversation? But this issue just cough my Attention, Its is a common story everywhere, someone come and will talk to the master and asked if they can have a chance to see their particular style of Fighting? Well, usually, the master is generous enough to show them a little piece of the cake, for the visitor to taste. Then later, the visitor will tell story, to other and tell what happen maybe less, or maybe add some additional flavor, to make it interesting topics. Well, guess what, whatever happen there, its only the masters and the visitor are only persons can tell what happen. Its similar story came up after Mark 'Wiley visited me in Paete together with his traslator from Manila Alex Go. Well, as soon as Alex went back to Manila he is been telling that Mark Sparred to some of the Master of Paete and the Paete master dont do well to Mark. For God sake, Alex its is a gesture to show a visitor a good time especially when time of fun. Mark and I together with seven Masters of different style of Arnis in Paete, Laguna, are giving demo to our particular Abecedario, and each of us has diffirent numbering, angles of attack and defense to each attacks. So we are just kind of having fun not sparring. Alex Go is telling story to the Bakbakan group in Manila, that master from Paete are no matched to Wileys skills.. Well, its not true, Mark and I will tell that a lie, story never occured but why bothered. Mark is a person has his own philosophy in fighting, train in several arts, I am not on his side, but I think he is doing a good job promoting FMA in general thru publication. I think Mark is a master of his own fighting philosophy, is not because he is Serrada, its because he is a man enough to show what he know and open to more knowledge to be added to his arsenal. Like all of us here in ED we are all learning everyday, every ED post, even we are just talking to, we are continues learning, for better ourselves, better Instructor, fighter and a persons. I personally think Mark Wiley is good for Serrada master and students, he bring the Serrada in new level , promoted in Books, he talk about it with prides, I whish my student one day would do that. Cabales Serrada are lucky to have him. I would love to leave piece to everyone and hoping that one day, we are can get together and see how much we learn from this Digest. Ray keep this ED as learning Digest, Argument its good, comprontation is healty to one subject, to give everone side a shot to hear their point of view, but sometimes, we have to look at the broads picture so we are not looking only on our sides. Lets help each other, I am willing to help if you are. Again, according to Tony, they bashed him around so severely that he was covered with bruises, and then he basically told them he wanted to immediately learn their style, because he couldn't deal with them with what he had! Is that a comment on the skills of Mark Wiley, the effectiveness of serrada or the normal boasting of one style vs. another? I don't know. I just throw it out there for everyone to think about. By the way, I don't know anything about serrada, nor have I ever studied Kali Illustrisimo- I have no opinion either way! >> I doesn't sound like anything that has any definite meaning. It doesn't tell me much about his skill.....He fought a group of other good fighters, one after another, half way around the world in their country, and afterwards has bumps and bruises..what a shocker !!! He's there to get info for a book, these guys he fought with, are some of his contacts, so he tells them their style is really good.. Wow another surprise. >> ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 10:50:45 PDT Subject: eskrima: 2001 Seminar Schedules Forwarding.
