Ray - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi again everyone: I apologize that the last e-mail I sent was incomplete. My e-mail server has been acting crazy. Anyway, just pickup from my transmission. If some of you want to schedule outside those Months I indicated; it will be really on first come first reserve basis. Next year in March, I want to tie the seminars in Southern California because our 1st Doce Pares World Championship will be held in Los Angeles hosted by GM Richard Bustillo. This a good time to train hard and get in shape for that event on March 25th, 2001. I am also taking orders for head & body gears. You can order individually or as a school. For now the cost for both is $139.99 plus shipping & handling. This will go up next year due to the cost of importing, customs tax and transportating them here. Stick canvas bags (holds 10 sticks, two daggers, pocket for wallet, pocket for water) $18.00. The fire-hardened Rattan sticks: glazed and dynamically tapered run at $6.50 each. E-mail me for quantitive discounts. You can also order GM's books through me or lock on the main website. Your orders there will be filled back east through GM's daughter Kitty who controls the www.docepares.com. The next few months we will have the www.westcoastdocepares.net tied into the main one. You can respond to me by my e-mail: jebrup@worldnet.att.net Thank you all, Rev. But as an artist I always carry a utility razor blade. I think what ever knife you carry as long as easy to access in time you need it, is there is better than any knife they have. I will give one example of scenario what happen to my father. My Father Grandmaster Felipe "Garimot" Baet is teaching Police Baranngay in our area during Marcos Time. He was teaching them how to disarmed the knife and to used them. Well, my dad's was asked by one policeman and he said, why bothered to disarmed the knife if he has the gun, my dad has small one and half pocket knifes in his pocket, he open this up and right on the spot, my dad stub him, one inch on his belly and keep it there and asked where's your gun? The police reply, its in my house. You want this to happen to you in the street. Next time you will see a knife attacker, will target your neck, heart, artery, etc., those part of your body that is easy to access to cut. This is what happen to the smart people who trying outsmart the master fighter. This scenario got a strong impact to there training. Even up to now, they still talk about this scenario. They know that the attacker is not going to play is go for the kill. I am just saying is it is really matter? what kind of blade you have in your waist or body? I think is the best knife is the one you have, it with you. Okay, I am just making a clear idea of a knife thread. What ever is the one your state is legal to carry, and the one that you can affords is good enough to carry. But don't forget, once you carry a knife, and you got in trouble, control yourself, its better to control the situation, not to control you by the situation. Be smart don't be fooled by this coward people, I hate see you in Jail by this because you are "matapang" (courageous). Keep training and I hope I gave you a piece of advice. If you are not sure how to used them don't bring it with they might used it also against you my friends. Through an unusual bit of luck, I was able to get a Benchmade folder (not sure what model) 2 5/8" blade. Good sturdy design, nice action, with a thumbhole for one hand opening. I carry this from time to time in place of the Dyad. Unfortunately I ruined the blade slightly when I use it to cut the stock of some veggies, and did not bother to clean the sap off of the blade. It was enough to start a small amount of corrosion, which in turn caused tiny pits to form...I thought it would hold up to sap stains the way my (2nd hand) Gerber Black Bolt (I think an older model of this), the blade of which has held up to moisture and resisted corrosion rather well over ten years (perhaps more)... >> ------------------------------ From: abass@iname.com Date: Sat, 5 Aug 2000 22:31:53 -0400 Subject: eskrima: FMA Techniques Online Resource The FMA page at: http://www.geocities.com/kalipages has been up for just over a year and may well be the largest launch site for downloadable FMA technique videos, animations, photos, diagrams, and textual descriptions on the web. I want to thank all ED members, and especially those who offered me advice or links off- list, for sharing their knowledge with me. I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks and will no longer have the huge amount of free time to surf the web that I have at my current job; I won't have the time to search for new content as I have in the past. Please, please help me keep this resource alive by sending me links or information that you think is pertinent to the page's content whenever you can. But can anyone advise me about any schools located in the State of New Jersey that teaches Silat and/or Kuntao? I cannot find a school in the usual directories. In addition, can anyone recommend a good school that they would train with? Thank you for your attention to this matter. For FMA/JKD try our school if your in central NJ...Livingston area.. Integrated Martial Arts & Fitness 973 422-1500.. If your closer to NYC try Master "Dong" Cuesta ... FMA only but a truly great instructor... don't have the school number off hand but if you call me I'll give it to you.. Gat Puno Abon Baet's observations regarding Alex Co and the Laguna Arnis Masters highlights how easy it is to misunderstand events. A somewhat similar misunderstanding occurred 8 years ago in Cebu.... I was in the Philippines training with my teacher Grandmaster Abner Pasa, two "World Champions" searched us out - since they wanted to experience the traditional art as opposed to the sporting aspects. When we played them, it became apparent that they lacked training with the 'live' hand - and had poor defensive skills with the stick. I suggested to Abner that they train with Ernesto Berdin - an eskrimador who is a great teacher and is well known for his fantastic defense with the stick and live hand. In those days, Berdin worked as a coach. His teaching progression was that he first taught you how to 'set up' your attacks with the live hand. He would leave openings for you - so you could begin to recognise that line of attack, and at times would 'guide' your strike into the opening. Later, he would start to close certain openings. This was done, so that you then developed some feinting skills - in order to create more openings. Eventually, when he felt that you were too occupied with attacking - he would counter. This is when you learnt the defensive training. The two individuals never made it this far. The two "world champions" in question got carried away after the first days training - and made some remarks about Berdin to another Eskrimador with whom they were also training. Unknown to them - this guy was also a good friend of Berdin's. The remarks made were "We were all over this guy...almost hitting him at will etc." They had missed the point - Berdin was not playing them seriously, he was coaching them. Anyway, the news got back to Berdin - who immediately issued a challenge to fight them both - Juego Todo (No holds barred - with no armour). He told me that he was serious about it and that they could fight in a secluded part of Talisay - in the past he had fought 3 similar matches and won them all. These guys were also unaware that he also worked as an enforcer for the local mayor. I immediately advised these guys that they apologise for their stupidity or that they would be going back to England in body bags. Fortunately for them - they did. However, doors closed for them and they lost a great oppurtunity to train with some great men. The lesson to be learnt - If your there to test the guy - - say so. If your there to learn - be patient and keep your ego under control.
