Ernesto Berdin is the man I was referring to in my earlier post about teachers and fighters, who I trained with before I began training with GM Pasa. I can only give my 100% agreement to Krishna's comments about his skills and abilities. On top of everything else, he is a very nice guy, and I feel proud to count him as a friend. The 9 inch o.a.l. rule is a common misconception held by several L.E.O.'s in TN. As for a baton, whether it is expandable or not, if caught with one you are facing an unlawful possession of a weapon charge as with the knife if the blade length is over 4 inches and/or it is double edged. That is if you run into a real hardass L.E.O. I can not speak for all states, but in Virginia it is NOT illegal to buy, or possess an Asp. The concealment code is rather vague. The code for concealed weapons (18.2-308) says you shall not carry, "hidden from common observation (ii) any dirk, bowie knife, switchblade knife, ballistic knife, razor, slingshot, spring stick, metal knucks, or blackjack; (iii) any flailing instrument consisting of two or more rigid parts connected in such a manner as to allow them to swing freely, which may be known as a nun chahka, nun chuck, nunchaku, shuriken, or fighting chain; (iv) any disc of whatever configuration, having at least two points or pointed blades which is designed to be thrown or propelled and which may be known as a throwing star or oriental dart; or (AND THIS IS THE CATCH ALL) (v) ANY WEAPON OF LIKE KIND AS THOSE ENUMERATED IN THIS SUBSECTION...." A dirk is not defined, but I understand it to be any double edged knife. A bowie knife is a fixed blade. A ballistic knife is a knife that propels the blade from the handle so as to make it a projectile. A razor, I would have to assume, refers to a straight razor. A spring stick is defined by the code as: "A spring loaded metal stick activated by pushing a button which rapidly and forcefully telescopes the weapon to several times it's original length." So my interpretation is no, it is not illegal to conceal an Asp. But, who is to determine "any weapon of like kind"? Answer: Initially a law enforcement officer and ultimately a judge. The same thing goes for blade length. There is no code defining blade length, except for on school property (under 3"). Everywhere else, blade length is not clearly defined, and is subject to interpretation. I am an LEO in Va. and I asked our Commonwealth's Attorney about the "like kind" thing. He said that if you found someone with multiple folders (probably more than two), no matter the length, you could classify that as a like kind. So I guess that you could also define a really large folder in that category too. I really have to question that. I personally would not have much heartache over a folder or an Asp, but that's me. A lot of these laws are really open to interpretation, and I would suggest looking at a copy of your state code, along with city and county ordinances, and interpret them for yourselves. Any CA or DA's office would probably be able to answer it also, but again you may not agree with their interpretation. Sorry about the lengthiness of this reply, but as you can see, it is a complex issue. The garment I have, which my Sifu calls a sarong, is a long tube of material, about 2 ft wide, and joined at the ends so that it is a circle, about 5 ft in diameter (I suck. I imagine I'd have to wear a tunic or something underneath it, or else there would be naughty bits exposed ;) It's really big to wear as a wraparound skirt..I guess I'd have to pin it or something. I can see wearing it over the shoulder and down to the hip, and imagine it would be very good for carrying babies in...I guess I'll just put my cat in there...;) If I knot it at the waist, I have this massive chunk of cloth (i'm only small) on my hip...i guess I'll just keep playing with it. I'm familiar with pareos, and can wrap one fairly well, but this tube of cloth has got me stumped... :) jocelyne Roaring Girl * Purveyor Of Fine Books * Beater Of Bodhrans * Smiter Of The Wicked * * Owned By Angus, Most Elegant And Pleasing Of Cats * ------------------------------ From: Mikal Keenan Date: 7 Aug 00 13:23:56 CDT Subject: eskrima: Claws n'Thangs Aho... I was just reading an old digest which included a post stating "like all cats, the claws don't function primarily as a damaging weapon. They are more of an assist to the act, in the fact that they are so drastically hooked, and are used to grab the shoulders or haunches of the prey (larger prey anyway). Then, they pull you down to ground, or closer to them, and use thier jaws (neck break for the large big cats, suffocation for many of the smaller ones). Taken in this context, I would never rely upon a claw maneuver of any type to be a fight stopper: not even those 600 lb. tigers do that. Instead they use them to give themselves a decisive advantage, like one of us would." Seems to me that this describes -feeding- behavior, not fighting. Cats will rip the guts out of another animal with their hind legs. Dogs do the EXACT SAME MANEUVER. Try this: get a little kitty mad and let it hang on to your hand with its front claws ... while it clings with those front claws and bites in a frenzy, watch what happens to your forearm!!! Working up to this you could try "sparring" with the kitty and see that it will swat with the claws of those front paws. I've only caught glimpses of the big cats fighting in Nature-type shows, but they show the same behaviors. The motivations of hunger and fear/anger drive very different expressions. Just my $0.02 worth.
