Maybe it was a phonetic misunderstanding? There is a populer chinese novel from the 16 (?) century called "Shui Hui Chuan" or "Marshes of mount Liang", which is sometimes referred to as "The heroes of the Liang Shan Po". I believe there is an English traduction of this novel, done by a certain Mr. Dent-Young and his son. You might be able to find the book at amazon by looking for "Dent-Young". There was also a very good japanese TV-series about this book, which I liked very much back in the seventies (when I was a child) and which in fact contributed very much to my decision to bigin training MA. ;-) The story is about a couple (I believe 144) heroes gathering together to rebel against the chinese emperor. Anyway there was a lot of fighting in the TV series, and there is a lot of MA background in the book too Greetings from Germany Ludwig - -- Sent through GMX FreeMail - http://www.gmx.net ------------------------------ From: "Julius Chang" Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 20:45:32 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Safety >From: Patrick Davies >Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 15:44:58 +0100 >Subject: eskrima: safety > >hi >Working in Industry with strict safety standards nowadays there are some >basic tenants that can also relate to training or real life scenarios. Now you could try to prioritize the screwups, perhaps by likelihood of occurrence or maybe impact or even a combination of both. But you also might consider asking the question in a positive light: What must go right? Then make sure those elements are taken care of. Most likely, the correct path is unique and unambiguous. By looking for "correctness", it is easy to spot mistakes. Those are the elements that don't fit your model of correctness. You don't have to know what the mistake is to know that there is something wrong. Once you recognize that there is a problem, then you can go ahead to figure it out. Ray mentioned a few posts ago about the laws in CA. concerning carrying a knife. Well Ray you should consider yourself lucky, that in CA at least you have one defining law. In Michigan you can carry a knife in one city, and in the next city be cited for the same knife. I have heard from students in different states that this is not an uncommon thing, is it like that in CA?? Any ways my advise is just don't carry one!! Just my 1/2 a penny's worth. And then we have...> ) because nonwhite guy's use these type > of weapons - fat-cat white guy's carried guns - so these same white guy's who > make the law sayes guns are only a mistermeanor - any weapon that a nonwhite > carries has to be a felony AHH!!! YEA!!! OOOKay dokay .... Actually it was my understanding at least here in Michigan, that for the most part the balisong/butterfly knife is illegal more so because of the nature in which it is usually viewed by the misinformed masses. Most everyone looks at its simplistic and quick form of opening as an intention to be easy to get at in combat, hence the term most lay people use when referencing the knife " Filipino fighting knife " so to the misinformed what else is the knife for other than to hurt people and since fighting is illegal than why the hell wouldn't a fighting knife be illegal? At least that's one of their excuses here! I am sure every state has their brilliant reasoning for taking what could be a very effective form of self defense away from the good citizens, after all we all know that the bad guys would never carry a knife for fear of breaking the law!! Ali was naturally fast and light on his feet so how did he fight??? He used this natural ability or talent as you say. Hielio (sp) Gracie by his own word said he was a small frail young man and he new he was going to end up on the ground a lot so he he capitalized on that weakness which ended up being his hidden talent. Now I don't think you can argue with either of these examples. However remember the really smart fighter utilizes his natural abilities and tries to master his own weakness, because lets face it you rarely ever lose a fight on your strong points now do you!! > I say train neither. Train concepts that help to put tools into play. For > those JKDC people that is what "attributes" are all about. "Tools > implemetation are a secondary result of proper attribute execution". > WOW!!! what can I say........but WOW!!! WOW!!! way to deep for me Doc!! WOW!!! Man I gots to have you learn me so's I can talks real perrdy like that.:-) Tuhon Bill, I met one of your guys the other day, I can't remember his name, he was a rather large Iron worker, big and strong, stopped by the club to mess around with some Pentjak, nice guy too. He had good things to say about you, just thought you'd like to here some positive stuff. P.S I often play Rock n Roll or dance type music at my seminars which is usually well received, except when I get some real traditional Japanese types. This guy said you played some strange game show type of music amongst other stuff!!!!! Man only a New Yorker could get away with that stuff, of course only a New Yorker would have the ball to do it :-) Any ways its good to see PT making a bit of a come back in Mich. Second > exercise being getting out of your car in a car park. > Thoughts? Hi Pat and list: Funny you should mention this. Seems I go through parts of that mental drill every time I go out at night or even down the garage. There's been break-ins and we even found one guy hiding in one of the trash rooms, what a fun search that was (on volunteer bldg patrol). I admit to premeditation as I go armed somehow (sometimes just gotta' go downstairs cause forgot something in the car). Neighborhood can be a very tough place to be at night. One time looking out my l/r window I saw some tourists get robbed - a carload doubleparked, the four occupants jumped out encircled the couple and got his wallet then drove away like nothing. I reported to police but without complete license plate was no use :-( And since one of my neighbors got a rock through their window (second floor unit to boot), I've stopped checking cars and bushes with my maglite in fear of similiar retribution. I see the drug deals going down, bums trying to sleep in the bushes, people/dealers hanging on the corners signal each other by whistles (hey this is at 3am etc.) Before the gates went up they would be using the bldg. doorways for a toilet and prostitution too. Life in the city? Some of the hazards of living in a popular tourist area I guess? (Imagine you live on Kalakaua or Kuhio like that, beautiful daytime but change at night then again at very late night) Not to give wrong impression, this is a wonderful place to live, much to offer, just trying to be realistic though maybe some of these fears are just in my own head? My wife was almost a statistic but that was dealt with thank God for helpful strangers/decent people. Matter of fact after class tonight we reminded each other not to kid ourselves if in a conflict but will fight to the death than be abducted. Those victims usually not found. Alive. Or even in one piece. Shudder. Now how I supposed to sleep? joking! Be good to yourselves and to others, Phil ps. oh yeah btw it took another break-in before the building got smart and removed the door sign that said "Owner Storage Room"- like we wanted to direct the burglars there or something. well, it worked real good thank you. doh. ------------------------------ From: "Phil Tong" Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 00:17:45 -0700 Subject: eskrima: RE: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #381 GatPuno: > But as an artist I always carry a utility razor blade. What does he think about it, does he mind it, etc...
