More, of course, would be required for hydration when involved in heavy exercise for longer periods of time. >The question is if 64 oz per day is good is 128 oz per day better? Or is max benefit (for a non-heavy workout day) attained at 64 oz? Not sure I understood the q, and definitely NOT a health guru, but having been "on that old river ride of pain" (passing a kidney stone) I can share this with you: 1. My doctor recommended I drink at least 3 liters of water a day, forever. That is roughly 98 oz water/day or around 12 glasses. I think I should drink more on hot days and when exercising. This was to help prevent the formation of other kidney stones. 2. A friend asked a prostate specialist on how to prevent prostate problems, and one thing the doc recommended was to drink a minimum of 12 glasses of water per day...that is a minimum of 12. I believe 64 oz.is a minimum amount of water a person should drink in order to achieve satisfactory hydration for a day. tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: "Michael Koblic" Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 18:50:31 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Buckets of water "The question is if 64 oz per day is good is 128 oz per day better? Or is max benefit (for a non-heavy workout day) attained at 64 oz?" The reason God gave us kidney is to pee out the excess. BTW, I have never understood the magic figure of 64 oz (about 2 litres outside US). Your fluid intake needs to cover your insensible losses (respiration and perspiration, stool is normally a minimum) and produce urinary output to keep kidneys functioning normally (about a litre a day). Your fluid intake will not consist just of water you drink but other fluids in your diet and on your diet composition (carbohydrates v. fats v. protein). The rough guide is that if you pass over 1 litre of urine a day you are drinking enough (how you measure it I shall leave to your ingenuity). On the other hand, you have to drink about 20 litres of water a day before you run into water intoxication. I know that people on reducing diets are advised to drink "6 to 10 glasses of water a day". I guess it is supposed to fill their stomach by calorie-free fluid, but they sure pee hell of a lot!
