My instructor was Daniel Duby and we learned la canne. Dan inosanto taught there that summer and he was in the audience the night that la canne was demonstrated- if I recall correctly. Daniel's savate training partner (also a la canne practioner) was Paul V. who went on to learn JKD/Kali from Dan and others (Tim Tackett) and is now a famous instructor. there was a lot of cross fertilization in martial arts because of CMAA. This is historically important in my opinion. Jeff Burke Paul Vanek was the guy's name, and I believe he still teaches. Tim Tackett and Leo Gaje taught there also while i was there that summer. I personally like 'Thunderdrums' by Scott Fitzgerald. It has a good tempo and while there are some other instruments, the drums are definitely the dominant theme. If you are interested, check it out on Amazon here (or just search for Thunderdrums on Amazon): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000018FF/qid%3D966567156/002-9398109-1089661 There are some samples on that page you can listen to. My wife and I are off to Myrtle Beach for the weekend. I'm looking forward to some Kali on the sand! I attended a Tuhon McGrath seminar there a couple of years ago (it was great) and the cool thing is that the sand shows you the patterns in your footwork. Keep in mind that this is >a 3 week vacation. Just a basic, good instructor imparting basic knowledge >over a limited time period. An instructor noted for imparting instruction >in a basic, easy to learn fashion, who is not narcissistic or an >ego-maniac. I haven't trained with everyone, so I can't be sure that someone is not an "egomaniac, etc.", but I think that probably, Doce Pares is your best bet for a short vacation. They have a program where you just pay as you go, by the hour of instruction. You can go when you want, and train as much or as little as your vacation schedule allows. With some of the others, it might require more of a time committment, or you might have to try to fit your training time with their teaching schedule, etc. I don't have my address book with me right now, but if I remember correctly, the address of the downtown school is 81 C. Padilla St. (Doce Pares guys, correct me here if needed) in Cebu. Most taxi drivers should also know it, though don't just say Doce Pares, because they also have a big facility far from downtown, up on the hill. When will you be there? I should be in Cebu myself around the middle of September, so if you will be there at that time, let me know and perhaps I can introduce you to a couple of other places. He has made several CDs, (Earth Tribe Rhthyms; Rhthym Hunter; many others) which due to their complete "niche-lessness" do not get any airplay even though LOTS of people resonate strongly to the music when they hear it. There is a good chance that the drum music you heard Guro Inosanto play is his-- when Guro I. heard I knew Brent he and I went to Brent's house/studio out in Joshua Tree one time for a drum lesson. Some of his CDs are available through the catalog page of our website: www.dogbrothers.com. Martial Arts hereby cordially invites you to our "Real Contact Stick Fighting" at our "Autumnal Equinox Dog Brothers' Gathering of the Pack" on Saturday, September 23, 2000 at 11:00AM at 4th St. and Ardmore in Hermosa Beach. The MAGIC WORDS: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be Friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital and that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way! Protect yourself at all times! Real Contact Stick Fighting is Dangerous and only you are responsible for you. All copyright belongs to Dog Brothers Inc." And dear guest, please remember this means "NO VIDEO CAMERAS!" As always, you may take photographs for personal, non-commercial use PROVIDED you give us a complete set of the ones you take. Our thanks to those of you who actually follow through and do this. It is much appreciated! Also, please note that the "no suing no one for no reason etc." language applies to those of you in the audience too. If a stick or a fight comes careening your way- get out of the way! FIGHTERS MUST PRE-REGISTER, even if they have fought before. Go to the website, print the form and FILL OUT THE FORM AND GET IT TO US OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO FIGHT. We have too much to do on Gathering day to have to deal with fighters signing up at the last minute as well. Get in touch with us for info by calling (310) 543-7521. This is a 24-hour number. Remember that you may fight with weapons other than a stick if you can find someone willing to go against you. You and your opponent may agree to a "strike fight" wherein both agree to avoid grappling in order to emphasize striking skills. The knife fighting done as a warm-up will again allow for 2 versus 2 matches.Once again we will be looking for more realistic behavior in the knife fights that open the day. To that end in the 1x1 fights the rattan dowels are out and Sharkee knives (hard plastic knives which will be provided) or, for those looking to go a step further, aluminum training blades are in. The rattan dowels will still be allowed in any 2x2 fights. Again we are calling for those interested to come prepared for "stick and knife" fights. The knife in these fights will be of the aluminum training type. Staff fighters will be allowed to have wrestling type ear guards under their fencing masks. As I write this we are promised fighters from Europe, and Canada, as well as from across the United States. A potential Catfight will have to wait until the Spring Gathering due to a broken arm. Brent "Earth Tribe Rhythms" Lewis will be on drums once again. On a personal note, yours truly remains on sabbatical. I will be there as Ringmaster however. PARKING. People often express surprise at the fact that we get to do what we do in a public place. It has been a very good trick and there is more to it than meets the eye. The Gatherings have gotten fairly large (30-35 fighters and some 3-400 observers is typical) and so we need really ask everyone's cooperation on the subject of parking. Pretty please with a cherry on top! Therefore PLEASE park in the lots on Valley Drive, (which is one street west of Ardmore- cross the Greenbelt at 2nd or 8th Street) either at 4th street or 8th street or in the parking lot on 2d street just west of Pacific Coast Hwy or in the parking structure on the northeast corner of Ardmore and Pier Ave (approximately 12th street) and walk the ¼ mile along Ardmore to 4th street. Be aware that there is a driveway at the end of the gravel area on the street where the Gathering is held that can easily be blocked and if it is blocked, parking enforcement will get called. Please be sure that your parking does not obstruct any driveways! This is not just a matter some parking tickets. Local dynamics are such that this can lead to the prevention of future Gatherings at this location and finding another location would be real hard. So please be considerate, arrive early, and park at the alternative locations and walk the last few blocks! SEE ATTACHED MAP. As always, you would be wise to arrive with an empty bladder.
