In my quest for knowledge in the FMA , I have had the greatest of honor and luck to have trained or met with the likes of Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje (Pekiti Tirsia) ,Master Nap Fernandez (Yaw-Yan), the late Grandmaster Tatang Illustrisimo, Grand Master Tony Diego (heir to Kali Illustrisimo) ,Master Yuli Romo (kali Illustrisimo), Grand Master Cacoy Canete (Doce Pares), Tuhon Bill Mcgrath (Pekiti Tirshia), Guro Tom Bisio (who I haven't really met but have spoken to a few times Pekiti Tirshia / San MIguel Eskrima), Guro Omar Hakim (Pekiti Tirshia)to name a few. This past week add to the list another great FMArtist Guro Jun de Leon (guro by title but definitely a grand master as far as I'm concerned). Once again I am honored to have met someone who is definitely a wonder to behold. Guro Jun is from Toronto , Canada who came to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to visit his family and just by luck , I happen to train with his cousin. He will in the future be travelling back here to Florida (hopefully in the near future) and for those of you who live in the area should not miss this chance to see what a pure FMArtist is all about. Please send your sentiments to me via my email and maybe we can get together and get him over here to do a seminar and more. Although I'm sure there are others I haven't met and hope to meet someday, I always thought that I have been lucky to have seen the best and trained with the best (my opinion of course) and I just wanted everyone to know whatch out for Guro Jun de Leon. With all due respect, Rj Marcaida ------------------------------ From: Steve Klement Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 13:40:23 -0400 Subject: Re: eskrima: students Under my current situation I need approximately 35 - 40 students to stay in the black. Unfortunately, I have only 20 students at this point. It has been lower and higher but that is the average. If I could get my average at 30 I would be much happier. As it stands, love and dedication of the art and full-filling my responsibility as an Inayan Guro keeps me going. There are times that it drives you crazy to pay (out of your own pocket) to teach but all I have to do to keep the faith is remind myself that my own Instructor (Suro Inay) has been through the same thing. Knowing that he went through the same things and never even hinted at the pressure as he taught me and others is enough to keep me going. Do you have a number in mind when it comes to regularly paying students that you feel you need to maintain to keep your business successful? e.g. you feel you need a minimum of 50 [insert-other-#-here] paying students to keep your school running in the black month after month?" To which I would add the question; do the "standalone" schools teach only FMA or FMA, Thai boxing, JKD, etc? I haven't seen a stand alone school that taught only one system of FMA in many years and was wondering if there were any left? It seems that to survive in today's market as a stand alone you have to either become a child care service (most karate schools), an aerobics class (Tae Bo) or a martial arts college ( Inosanto Academy, MKG, etc) covering several different disciplines under one roof.
