Well that is obvious Inayan Eskrima Right? Hehe No seriously, this is a good question. What is it? Well the answer is simple. All of them. Each style or technique is viable within it's own environment. So you as the practitioner have to determine what your "environment" is. Many people involve themselves in the Martial Arts for different reasons. An art should be chosen on personal preferances and your ultimate goal within the arts. Some may prefer combat effectiveness and will chose a rough and tumble art... Others want to look like the latest Movie star and pick an art based on the latest whackem-smackem movie. Still others do it for fitness, and many for socializing. So when asked what is the best art to train? I ask why do you want to train in the arts? The answer to this question will help determine what art is right for the questioner. Or you wouldn't be studying it. Ok, so if asked with the same question, what are list members response, whether FMA or not, and why? Depends upon the person's personality, purpose, and other factors. Some folks don't like punching away at other people (maybe they should try Aikido or other grappling arts), or using sticks, weapons, etc. or have to take care of their hands (surgeons, concert pianists) and wouldn't want to risk serious (albeit accidental) injury while in training. Some people aren't comfy carrying around or using weapons at all, but don't mind kicking (in self defense natch)... I usually ask the person a couple of questions to see which way they lean...and try to recommend something that might suit them (so as to somehow lower the frustration factor)...if the "akser" has the luxury of time (and a few bucks to spare), I recommend they "audit" different styles, to kind of do a test drive... And then I recommend FMAs... : 8 )) (O BTW: sometimes when I recommend Arnis, the retort I get is: "Yeah, but what if I don't have a stick with me? Ain't it more practical if I study unarmed self-defense, eh? Eh?" To which I just thought of response(d'oh): That's true, but when you learn to use weapons you a) get used to dealing with sticks and knives coming at ya from the git go, so you kinda get desensitized (lose some of your natural fear of 'em, yet at the same time learning a new appreciation and respect for what they can do) and 2) the defenses and disarms usually work equally well without a stick or knife (depending on the breaks)... First of all remember this, no one ever gets rich by renting. Here's a little tip from uncle Rock. I teach Cuentada DeMano, and Anciong's Balintawak, two very small arts. To even teach Balintawak I had to promise GM Buot that I would never have more than 6 people in a class, to insure proper instruction. And of course most people have never heard of CDM before. ANd I have a "TAKE ONE"S DOUGH" school a few blocks down that offers a one year black belt course guaranteed. And to the lay person they don't know that what we offer is far superior to them, I have actually had people tell me that the guy down the street must be of higher level than me because he can guarantee them a black belt when I couldn't and trying to tell them that Balintawak didn't even have rank is something many just can't comprehend. So here's a few tips!!! Because I own ( a long with my bank ) my building, I got a hold of some buddy's that also do the lower profile arts, PentJak Silat Bukti Negara, Wu's Tai Chi, A very good Isshinryu guy, and a soon to be added BJJ guy, and I sub-lease it to each guy. Now I have a building that I would normally have a very rough time renting to any one person for 700.00 a month, that I receive 1200.00 a month for and if I can get these Yoga, and aerobics ladies to rent I'll be up to 1800.00 a month. So now I can teach the way I want too ( and so can they) since we don't have to worry about having a huge nut to bust every month. If I don't like you, your gone I teach what I want when I want and at the quality that I want. I don't have to take people just because I have bills. And most of my tenants are the same way and they love it, 4 or 5 students and they break even. And like George Darish the Pentjak instructor has often told me " Hell even if I lose $50.00 or even $100.00 a month, where am I going to find a place that I can call my own and train my way when I want" ( providing there is not a class going on). Another thing, I charge little more than most of my competitors, because I am worth it!!! And that's exactly the way I put it. If you have traveled here and there to train, and slept on floors and nasty motels and in cars and even a park or two , and taken many a nasty shots, and bumps broken bones and what not, then your worth every penny you charge and don't let others tell you different ( with in reason of course ). Many a times in America people take things for granted I can't tell you how many people I have trained over the years for free, and when something doesn't go their way, their gone. So no more you want it you pay for it!! I did and still do in form or another. Periodically offer special 6 week course's to advanced students on segments of the arts, say a 6 week grappling course, or single or double stick, or what ever. Don't gouge your students or make it mandatory just offer it you never know. Taylor programs around people. As I said a few months back, I recently have decided to teach Modern Arnis, even though in the past I have had many a disagreements with Professor Presas. But know I realize that his art fills a gap of self defense that is often missing, not everyone wants to be an Eskrimador, some want just a self defense art, that can be learned quickly, so now we have it. And if it wets their appetite later on then hey the CDM and Balintawak, is there. So their you have it. I think if you maul around all the other post that have been made along with mine you can tailor something for your needs. You know 28 years ago this month I started Martial arts, I still haven't seen anyone levitate, move someone without touching them, beat someone by just touching them, seen anything that is unexplainable or seen a Van Dam movie that was worth the price of admission. But hey at soon to be 34 I am not giving up hope!!!
