No matter where you are and what you do, you should constantly know your surrondings. In your scenario, the "victim" seemed to be too focused on the "attacker" and not look to see if anyone else was around, especially behind him. In addition, you should always have an "escape route", even if you beat the crap out of your attacker. It's about self-DEFENSE, remember? Before you can train for multiple opponents from a technical standpoint, you need to go back to basics and always use common sense --- i.e., watch your back. >> This is exactly the kind of response(s) that I wanted to hear from members. Always assume more than one enemy is lurking around the corner, be aware of your surroundings, and never put yourself in the situation (a severe case of head in ass disease) I described. More to the point : "What do members do in training to prevent "tunnel vision"? It's a physiological response I believe, but you CAN be TRAINED to resist this biological urge. I am not sure how others train for multi attackers....... but I practice with a few people at once and go though scenarios with the women I teach basic self defense and street survival too...... its practice and awareness training and working on your instincts...... its part of the whole really....... for me it is......... and the way I teach it is...... It has become the way I train in my art forms as well as just basic stuffs.... its the overall deal personally for me..... But we work on multi attackers early on in training awareness and women's self defense...... and one of the deals is " Your not putting yourself in the position of going out late at night alone to get yourself something at the store......" that's just sort of stupid to begin with for a chick at night alone...... again its the overall awareness that comes when thinking of self defense here for me and when I teach straight out defense on the streets...... Yes there are times you have to go out late though and we make sure to cover it early on but again you have to follow the overall mind set here...... I would assume we are talking survival here on the streets its much different then the arts that we learn....... I have found that a lot of the cool things about learning an art that I enjoy are not always that practical on the streets what ya tend to use is the crow mag stuffs to hit and run..... why finish them off when once there down if you can get the heck out and leave instead....... again though we are talking about basic street defense........ what learning the actual art form does do for my skills overall is help me keep my mind clear and focused if you have that focus..... then you should be able to feel that other person behind you.... that's where the art part of the training helps but that is over the long road..... once you can have that it will help save you when you have more then one person at you....... Note: this is just my way of Training and the way I was taught to think and teach based on my life and teachers over the years......... "J Bows deeply to you" F.A.T.E "Facilitating Awareness Through Empowerment......." f_a_t_e_2000@hotmail.com P.S. Ray........ If one were to read the digest at certain times, one would think it would never be possible. Well it did happen and everyone had a great time. Before and after the demonstrations we all socialize like if we knew each other for years. Great jokes, war stories, food (not at the banquet), friendships were received by all. It would be great to see this continue in the future. Instead of arguing with each other through our common interests in the FMA's we could form an impregnable bond. The majority of the 500 or so people at the WHFSC event were from a Karate/Ju-Jitsu background. They all went crazy for the FMA demonstrations than for anything else. Maybe we should all pause and remember how we first went crazy for the FMA like when we first met our girlfriend, wife, boyfriend, husband, etc. We need to put that passion back in our arts. We could be on top of the world again! This is an annual gathering of grandmasters from all martial art systems from around the world. Unlike two previous WHSFC events I attended, I must say this event was fantastic. Of the over 100 grandmasters in attendance, 25 of them gave demonstrations of their arts on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Of the 25 demonstrations, 7 were FMA related. Not only did I see some great demonstrations but also I was able to meet some great people. The following are the grandmasters that demonstrated and the people I met (not all guros demonstrated). They were (in order of demonstration appearance): Grandmaster Guro Roberto Torres - Pencak Silat Perisai Setia (New Jersey) Guro Sarah Torres Grandmaster Ernesto A. Presas - International Philippine Martial Arts Federation & Kombatan (Manila, Philippines) Guro Ernesto Presas Jr. (San Francisco, CA.) Guro Julius Melegrito (Omaha, NE) Guro Mike Bowers (Portland, OR) Grandmaster Bobby Tabaoda - Balintiwak Eskrima Cuentada (Charlotte, NC) Guro Francisco Gaerlan Guro Jorge V. Penafiel (also has 5th Dan in Tang Soo Do) (Cincinnati, OH) Guro Eric C. Lawrence Guro Ronaldo Beltran Guro Glenda Woolf (1st woman certified in Balintiwak Eskrima Cuentada) Senior Student Sharon Loparo Grandmaster Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet - Garimot System (Pembroke Pines, FL) Grandmaster Ama Guro Raffy Pambuan - Pambuan Arnis Tulisan (Orlando, FL) Guro Woody Woodman Guro Travis DeVita Senior Student Shaun Burley Senior Student Dr. Luis Krudo Guro Ray Dionaldo - Filipino Combat Systems (Tampa, FL) Guro Todd Norton Master at Arms Bram Frank Also in attendance but did not demonstrate the FMA's of their systems were: Grandmaster Jurg Ziegler - Chief Doce Pares representative for Sweden Professor Joe Lansdale - Shen Chuan Stickboxing / Arnis As you can see, this was a great opportunity to see different FMA systems. Please excuse me for anything incorrect or omission of data. Respectfully, Al Sardinas Student of Garimot System of Arnis ------------------------------ From: "Al Sardinas" Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 19:29:38 -0400 Subject: eskrima: WHSFC - Part II - Demonstrations The following is a brief description of each demonstration I saw at the WHSFC event in Orlando, Florida. Pencak Silat Perisai Setia - Guro Roberto Torres and his daughter Sarah. First, Guro Torres demonstrated his prowess with the stick with his beautiful daughter Sarah feeding him strikes. I was amazed by Guro Torres speed and skill. Then Guro Torres moved onto empty-hand applications. Again, more deadly techniques. When the demonstration was over besides thinking how skilled the Guro Torres is, my personal thought was that Sarah is one daughter a father does not have to worry about. International Philippine Martial Arts Federation (IPMAF) & Kombatan- Grandmaster Ernesto A. Presas Whoever started the notion that Arnis is dead in the Philippines and there are no great grandmasters there was dead wrong! Grandmaster Ernesto Presas and his Guros Ernesto Jr., Julius and Mike overwhelmed the audience with skills with different weapons. Balintiwak Eskrima Cuentada - Grandmaster Bobby Tabaoda In the beginning of his demonstration, Grandmaster Tabaoda told the audience that all he had was 4 years of education and knew only one thing - the stick. Believe me, after seeing him demonstrate with Guro Francisco Gaerlan, that is all he needs to know. Watching them move I was wondering what was the secret of their stamina to execute so many techniques with extreme speed and power. Garimot System ( Laguna Arnis Federation, US Harimaw Buno, Hilot) - Grandmaster Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Since Gat Puno Abon demonstrated his stick skills before the demonstrations in a small seminar earlier in the day he decided to show the audience something different. He concentrated on showing his skills in Harimaw Buno (Filipino wrestling) and Hilot (healing massage). The audience enjoyed his skills and by the time we headed home, GP Abon complied with over 15 person's requests for healing massage. Pambuan Arnis Tulisan - Grandmaster Ama Guro Raffy Pambuan and Filipino Combat Systems - Guro Ray Dionaldo Ama Guro Pambuan electrified the audience with his different skills with the stick, knife and whip. Because Guro Ray Dionaldo was not on the demonstrators list, Ama Guro graciously allowed Guro Dionaldo to use the remainder of his time where he displayed skills with the knife and stick. All together, fast paced exciting demos by two Filipino masters. Knife Craft - Master at Arms Bram Frank Unfortunately, I was not able to see the demonstration because I had to run an errand. However, I heard that Master Frank had to demonstrate twice because during the first one there was a "Brandon Lee" type incident. Although there was supposed to be no videotaping allowed, some people were able to videotape portions of the demonstrations. I was one of them. I was able to shoot some amateur footage of Grandmasters Bobby Taboada, Ernesto Presas, Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet and Ama Guro Raffy Pambuan including Guro Ray Dionaldo. I regret that I did not film Guro Roberto Torres. I was also able to film an ice carving competition between Gat Puno Baet and Ama Guro Pambuan.
