In fact most traditional Okinawan stylist can't do very well in kata competition anymore. And the fighting is tailored to kick boxing range so infighting is usually broken up, also many tournaments do not allow leg kicks or sweeps, let alone destruction's. So it is kind of like playing a game of 7 card stud when we are only dealt 3 cards. We have tried sponsoring tourneys of our own, with more mix it up rules but the attendance has been small. She would like to try FMA (had some rudimentary exposure to it at home, but what do parents know?!). I understand there is an FMA school in Princeton. Does anyone know it or of it? Can I recommend it to her? She taught Omar Hakim, Mike Mukatis and myself when we were in Indonesia with Pendekar Herman. If there is one thing I can say about her is that her silat is very aggressive. I think time training with her is time well spent. Why don't FMArtist enter empty hand tournenaments or better yet have there own ? Now this does not include FMA arts like Yaw Yan, Sagasa, or Sikaran which are essentially empty hand only systems. What I am talking about are arnis/eskrima/kali players/stylists. The FMA are supposed to be complete systems but I have never seem them in any empty hand open tourneys (forms or fighting) or have I seen an empty hand tourney organized by arnis/kali/eskrima groups/styles/orgs. I'm not saying it never happens, but I would say that it is a rare exception. Why is this ? I know that one of the arguments that is going to be put forward is that our empty hands are "to deadly" but that is just crap. Silat another style that is often said as "deadly" have tourneys. We have weapon tourneys which in themselves can be more deadly. Any ideas? Regards, Vince >> I don't know about "too deadly" (for the same reasons you say). The problem (for me) is this: my FMA empty hands do not lend themselves to point sparring so point sparring is out. In a full contact situation, my reflexes are too likely to override rules and get me disqualified. That leaves NHB ... too easy to get a broken appendage which I need for work ... therefore it's not worth the trouble. As to why there are no FMA specific competitions for empty hands, I don't know. Ashley Bass took this off his site, as there was some question about whether Guro I. approved its existence there. I asked Guro I. about this earlier this month at a seminar (where I also met Sled Dog - very cool!). He didn't seem to wish to say anything negative; basically that he just wants to teach and leaves "that stuff" (business/legal stuff) to Simo Paula. He DID say that he felt it was a bit outdated and that he was working an a new book (of course, with HIS schedule, I'll probably buy the book from him when I take my grandkids to his seminar!). Basically, I got the feeling that he'd rather it not be available. He appreciates our desire for it and so hasn't really pushed the issue (again, he wouldn't just come out & say, "no, I don't want it there"), but... It's off the site and looks to stay that way. jester >From: "Daniel J. Pittman" >>Does anyone have a softcopy (ie. downloaded version) of the Guro Inosanto's >>Filipino Martial Arts?
