He was a great man and I had the good fortune of meeting with him a few times several years ago. We have been in touch consistently over the years to discuss blade design and options for promoting ITO. He provided some sound advice to me on several occasions. This is a shock to the FMA community. He will be greatly missed. Jason, you put so well his approach to spreading and getting respect for the Pilipino martial arts. Because he and I both chose this approach his loss is a real shock and he will always have a place of honor in my heart. My very best wishes to you and those close to him. b ------------------------------ From: MdlAgdLftr@aol.com Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 19:40:29 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Suro Inay To all the members of the Inayan Brotherhood... I did not study with Suro Inay directly, but with four of his Guros. I did, however, have the opportunity to meet Suro on several occasions, and one of my fondest memories of Mike was at a seminar he taught here in Fort Wayne, IN, about 15 years ago. I had gone outside for a smoke during a break, and Mike came out shortly after and sat on the steps of the school with me. He said that we had never had much of a chance to get to know each other on the previous times we had met, so we sat there for quite a while, just exchanging small talk, and learning a little bit about each other. I told Mike at that time that I had worked in corrections for a number of years, and that his Eskrima was what I relied upon the many, many times that I had to defend myself against the inmates. I told him that his system worked for me when I needed it, and I had complete confidence in it. This pleased Mike a great deal, and we spent the rest of the weekend he was in town getting to know one another. Mike tested me during the time he was in town by having me teach various techniques to the other participants, and told me at the conclusion that he felt I knew what I was doing, and that I had been well-taught. This meant more to me than just about any other experience I've had in the martial arts. He also paid me the compliment of saying that he admired that I had stuck it out with Eskrima, despite having physical problems that hindered my study at times. I will remember Mike as a down-to-earth, genuine, and totally approachable human being, and as a martial artist with few peers. Mike was a man truly deserving of the title "Master." My sincere condolences to you, Ray, to Jason and Jenna, and to all the members of the Inayan Brotherhood. Rest in peace, Suro...
