He was one of many Martial Arts groups being showcased at a large mall. Up to that time I had studied Karate, Aikido and some kickboxing. When I saw Mikes Demo with sticks and knife, I was totally blown away by the speed and techniques. I was completely taken with the Art from that moment on. In those early years, as well as Mike being my mentor, we became fast friends, and spent many a night discussing martial arts. Because of our friendship I had the good fortune to work out with Angel Cabalas (Mikes fundamental teacher), Max Serramento (Who introduced Mike to Angel), Leo Heron, and Danny Innasanto, to name a few. I remember after working out with Max how Mike and I would listen to Max tell stories about how some of his moves evolved, and stories about Angel. I will always treasure the home movies I took over the years during the workouts. I was also honored by Mike by becoming the 9th instructor to be promoted by him. And was very privileged to assist him in designing the medallion used to denote rank levels. Mike truly had amazing insight and analytical vision into the art of combat. He was a patient teacher, and a brilliant tactician, with a good sense of humor. We would be watching some martial arts fight scene, when it was over he would pull me off the couch and act out the moves, than incorporate the reverse responses. I sometimes felt he was a warrior born in the wrong time. So teaching became his passion and his life. Few have the depth of understanding, and the ability to teach. Mike had both. He was a special Man, and a very special friend. His Life is gone, but his Sprit and Legacy continues. You will be sorely missed my friend, but never forgotten. Forever Your Friend, Frank De Fanti ------------------------------ From: ricklind@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 11:00:45 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Suro Inay's influence My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Suro Mike Inay. Many of us have never met him but nonetheless have been directly influenced. His tapes showed his skill and make us better. His influence in teaching the Filipino Arts has been steady and powerful. This list is the direct result of his influence on Pooh Bah Ray, and I thank him for it. Kudos, Suro. You will be missed. Rest well. And the Arnis Balite group send their best wishes to the Inay family. ------------------------------ From: Steve Klement Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 15:09:52 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Suro Mike Inay The most sharing person I have ever met. Not just in words or in theory - he fulfilled the definition with his actions constantly and not just through teaching Eskrima either. For example, he took me in under his wing when he had no job and barely enough money to feed his own family. He said to me then (I was 15), "Steve, as long as I have one piece of bread, you will have half". Eskrima was simply his vehicle - his destined ability and occupation. His deepest love. Indeed, if he had been a carpenter, he would have been one of the best ever and he would have taught others to be even better. Most people (unless they met him) would not even believe the incredible passion he had for the art. It was in his nature to spread that passion to those that would share it with him. He had not completed his goals - not even close. But, he did inspire enough of us to continue the path. Just last night it finally hit me with full force. After being swamped with phone calls and emails for two days from many sincere people I started to tire and get frustrated. I use to call Suro when I got tired or frustrated. I picked up the phone and realized. My adopted father, my teacher, my best friend would not be there to answer. I'm sure many others feel the way I do. People around the Country and World I have never even met that he touched in the same way. I know he would have urged us all to continue on with his dream or with your own. Indeed, his last instruction to me a few days ago was to keep the faith. So, I shall. I also consider myself fortunate to have Jason and Jena as a brother and sister and I know the Inayan System of Eskrima and the ITO are in very capable hands in them. Suro's wish was to have Jason take over if ever these unfortunate circumstances were to occur. I look forward to supporting Jason and Jena in the efforts to keep Suro's legacy alive. In doing so he will continue living for a long, long time. - -- Steve Klement (865) 988-7599 Inayan School of Eskrima - TN. inayan@mindspring.com http://www.inayaneskrima.com ------------------------------ From: "Eddie S.
