Apart from cutting it to length and using it, any advice on sanding, clear coat, stain (?), wax, or fire hardening would be appreciated. Archived lists or web addresses would be great. Anyone else hear this description? ------------------------------ From: "Tom Meadows" Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 16:59:20 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Leathernecks My understanding is that the term originated not from the high collars, but from the leather collars the marines made for themselves in order to keep from getting their throats cut. Supposedly these collars originated as a response to the Juramentado attacks, although I don't know where this puts the origin of the term chronologically. This legend and the one with the US armed forces going to the .45 because of the Moros are false. The Marine became known as a "Leatherneck" due to the leather neckpiece that was developed during revolutionary times to protect the Marines from swords to the neck during their boarding of ships. C.B. Colbys book "Leathernecks" shows a Marine wearing complete revolutionary war getup, w/muzzle loader, and the collar. I am still waiting on my copy of the Woodward video. Lee at B &B has been very helpful with this and I think the video will be worth the wait. As an experienced martial artist, I really liked Anthony DeLongis' approach to achieving relaxed one-ness with the whip. His videos are top drawer...only problem is that your segment was far too short. I was very appreciative of the comments he made about the difference in his application from yours and how that may affect training. I ordered a Si Davey whip and will be doin' that interminable "UPS watch" for the next couple weeks till it arrives. Are you available for instruction Tom? The Leatherneck term well pre-dates the US's involvement in the PI/RP. >> Ray's right in that it pre-dates US involvement in Philippines. The leather collar was for protection against getting one's throat slashed though. The collar on the "dress blues" is modeled after older (taller) "leatherneck" collars.
