Who > started the rumor? Hi, well I have been told, that the leathernecks should protect against poisonous blowgun arrows, that were supposedly shot at the necks of the patrols. I don't know about the truth, but it sounds more sensible than protection against blade attacks. Whostarted the rumor? " There are two kinds of people in war, those that really want to survive, and those that will just roll over and die. Those that want to survive do everything in their power to increase their odds of survival. A leather neck cover will not stop a full power strike from a bolo or Kris, but it can make the difference of life and death for glancing or misaimed blows. Just as the bamboo armor the Japanese wore would not stop a full power strike froma a Katana, it did make the survival difference for many of the blows that landed in combat. I suspect that when you noticed a lot of dead comrades from neck cuts, that maybe the smarter fighter would work to protect what was obviously a primary target for his attackers. You wipe it on as a wet oil and then you allow it to dry and then do several more coats. It won't chip off like laquer or varnish, seems to protect the stick from impact to a degree, and most importantly it turns tacky in the presence of sweat which makes it stay in your hand much better than any other finish. Tom Meadows >> We went to using boiled linseed oil a few years ago, and are very happy with the results. It does provide a much better grip on rattan than any other coating I've used, and is excellent for preventing splitting from moisture (sweat) in hardwood sticks, too. My son and my teacher both use large PVC pipes filled with linseed oil, and we just soak the stick inside the pipe for a couple of weeks. One note...it's important to use boiled linseed oil as opposed to raw linseed oil; raw oil takes months to dry.
