I'm not really new--i joined a few months ago, but i just got around to reading all the emails I've received since August. I am barely a Pilipino martial artist (I am Pilipino, but hardly a martial artist), but I am more of a fan than anything else. I have met many local martial artists, but i really don't have the time to work out. I do know, however quite a bit, and would like to comment on some of the old topics: 1. Of the Filipinos I have met, none have heard of Panantukan, Pananjakman, Hubad Lubad, etc., other than what has been used by the practitioners of the Filipino arts under Dan Inosanto. I believe the correct terms for a punching art is Suntukan, the kicking art is Sikaran, Buno is grappling, Tutop is trapping. These terms came to me by almost all of the gentlemen, and they speak different dialects. 2. Pretty much every Philippine-trained Master is sure that Kali, which is an ancient form of combat, no longer exists, and exists only as a newly revived term by Foriegn practitioners. To argue whether it exists or not makes no sense; just ask the million or so people who study these arts every day! But, we also cannot argue that the art does not exist in the Philippines, nor an "ancient" art anymore, nor can we point to the Philippines as the home of these arts...they are American Filipino arts. 3. I know that a school can stand on its own feet that only offers the FMAs, but one must know the business of running a school, and have impressive skills. I have found (and no offense if this hits home with anyone) that those who specialize in the FMAs have much better skill than those who have studied the arts as a supplement. If you are a "jack of all trades and a master of none", don't be surprised if the average guy off the street isn't impressed with you. Well, let me get off my soap box...I am looking forward to some great dialogues about the martial arts of my culture! Anyone here from the Sacramento, California area? >> Hi Jose, Welcome to the Digest; interesting points you make here, especially about the terminology. I recently began compiling a terminology list, and ran into the same things you state in your post. No one I talked to was familiar with any of the terms you mentioned, except for Panuntukan...however, I was also told that a more correct term would be Suntukan. I also wholeheartedly agree that the FMA's can stand on their own as a school's sole curricula (sp?). We run into countless players that do Filipino arts as a supplement to an existing core art, the "weapons" phase of their particular blend, or simply another name to hang on the school shingle. Time and time again we (our school) find that none, and I mean none, of these people's "arts" can stand up to pressure. They look good in Karenza and basic play, can spout terms and list an impressive lineage, but when the rubber meets the road, there is no substance, no background of solid practice to back up all the lip service. Guro Jun's formal training in arnis started in 1966 under Grandmaster Lamberto Ticsay. Over the years he's continually sought out masters to learn from and to improve his already very considerable skills. Among those masters he has trained with would include Leo Gaje, Dan Inosanto, GM Rosendo de Leon, Danny Marfal and Eliseo Javelosa, Dr. Jopet Laraya and Ernesto Presas. As well Guro Jun has received training under legendary stickfighter Grandmaster Manning Recto of Hinigaran, Negros Occidental. (On a personal level, I trained with GM Recto three years ago and could vouch that at 77 years of age, he was still very fiercesome and strong.) Guro Jun has started teaching in the Mississauga area just west of Toronto. The classes take place in the Dixie and Dundas area on Sundays from 4 pm to 6 pm and new students are welcome. Guro Jun is an excellent teacher who gives concise, easily understood and expertly demonstrated lessons. Many of our students have competed and medalled at international level competitions. If you'd like to come out and attend a class, please contact the Arnis Academy for further information. They had been married for six years and had one son, Jacob. Roger Lewis asked that I keep Jim Mahan and Jacob in my thoughts and prayers...and I ask that all of you add your prayers to mine for the family. It was a very sad day, but seeing all those people showing their respect and love made it more bearable. It wasn't until we needed to make all those calls/emails to inform everyone about Suro, that we (especially me) realized how difficult it is to get a hold of people without the proper info, and in many cases if it weren't for this list, I'm not sure that we could have gotten a hold of some of you at all. So it is for this reason that I am starting an Inayan contact information list. What I would like to ask is that anyone involved in Inayan, whether it be ISE, ITO, family member, etc, please send to me via private email your contact information so that we all may be able to contact one another in the advent of emergency or otherwise. What I plan to do is create one list with every ones info. I will then maintain the list and update it whenever necessary. I'm going to ask a few things from you when you send it: 1. Please put in the subject matter of the email "Inayan Contact Info", so that I will know it is important email and not spam. 2. Please indicate in the information how you are affiliated (ITO, ISE, friend, etc.) so that we know who you are. 3. Please mention if you would rather not have anyone else on the list know your info. In closing I would like to thank you in advance. If you have any questions about this request and what my intentions are for it, please email me privately, as I told Ray that I would keep this to private email so that I wouldn't clutter up the digest. PS I don't usually like to include titles in my signature, but I felt it was necessary in case you didn't know who I am. Thank you, Joe Tesoro Katalungan Guro Inayan Eskrima jct.jr@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 7:30:21 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V7 #474 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
