Speaking of GM Estalilla. A couple of years ago I received a flyer for a seminar that GM Estalilla was holding down in Eugene, OR, that unfortunately I was unable to attend. I was just wondering if anyone "in the know" could tell me if he will be coming up this way again anytime soon? No one seems to mention the Filipino Kuntao tape of Rick Hernandez though. Anyone out there looked at it? I've heard it's an indeginous style of Filipino boxing. Would appreciate your help. Form has been addressed at length; my $.02 is different strokes for different folks, though I'd argue everyone should keep good form in mind. As for function, I think it's pretty easy to make an argument for titles of some sort. "Hey you, the guy swinging sticks real good" doesn't work very well, nor does "yo dude who taught my teacher." Both respect and brevity call for titles of some sort. "Sir" works around my academy for the most part, though other terms are used, too. I don't think it's surprising that terms of respect are lifted from the language used where a martial art originated, nor would I be surprised to learn that some round eye lifted a term that would cause a native speaker to raise an eyebrow. Bad form perhaps, but the terms are functional. One of the things that attracted me to the FMA blend I study is that functionality, rather than orthodoxy, is stressed. If someone wants to keep kosher, more power to them. I don't see a percentage in worrying about what terms are used to connote respect, though, and hence am content to let folks use what titles they may.
