Coming from other empty hand arts, I have only little exposure to Silat, and Kuntao. I have Steve Plinck's video and the Palidan Silat knife fighting tape. I like Rick's tapes. There are some production quality problems, but they are in line with a lot of marital arts tapes. I am extremely impressed with his students that take a beating in these tapes. At then end of the tapes there are red marks on their faces and necks. I certainly would not want to be his demonstration partner. (This is not to say he mistreats his partners, because he does not hurt them) Not being from Kuntao, I find loads of information in these tapes. They are non stop with little repeating. Even when Rick shows a technique a second time, it flows and varies. You can watch these two tapes 15 or 20 times and still be picking up information from them. I don't wish to compare one tape to another, but I would put them up there with Steve Plinick's tape. It certainly adds a total new diminsion to my base "karate" art training. It gives a lot of information on in close, 3 to 6 inch techniques that appear to be highly effective. He dimonstrates how one short in close poke, slap or hit makes one react opening up a vital area such as the throat for a follow up more devistating 3 to 6 inch technique, that is then followed up by another. > ntioned (which in itself says a lot) I appreciate the feedback on the > Simonet ones and yes I agree the Plinck video is marvelous. GM E's recommendation is held in the highest regard. My only discomfort is that my friend will undoubtedly return to visit far more advanced than myself. I must go out to the training area now and work....mustn't wake up the wife, shhhhhh. I have written about him previously, as have list members David Reyes, Ron Reekers (a student of his) and Tom Meadows. Both David and Ron are far better qualified than I to comment in depth. I might add that Guro Inosanto, who attended with me a seminar of GM E's a couple of years ago hosted by Ron, has begun training with him and started preparing us in class for when GM E will come to the Inosanto Academy. Herr Knuettel, have you ever been to Mindanao, or to other parts using that > title? I'd be interested in hearing about any experiences regarding this, from any western > "Datu." (Seriously.) In Luzon or the Visayas, they would probably just look at you funny... Well, first of all, I never asked or applied for a title, neither for Guro, nor for Datu or for anything else. The first time I heard it was, when Professor Presas announced, that it is the first time, that he promotes a person to "Datu" outside of America. I am not or never was in the position to say: no, I dont want this, especially because it was in front of about 80 of my students during a seminar in 1996. It was an honor for me, because I only knwe of Datu Kelly Worden and Datu Shishir Inocally before. I was in the Philippines in 1983 for 3 months and again in 1986 for another 3 months, only for training purposes. I trained with different Masters like Ernesto Presas, Diony and Felimon Canete and others. I am totally aware, that the Datu title has no values in the Philippines regarding FMA, and that it would be totally ridiculous and unappropriate for me as a western person to go to the Philippines and say: "Hello, I am a "Datu". I have never been to Mindanao, because already in the beginning of the 80ies, we were told, not to go there. Too dangerous, even without the "Datu" title ;-) But as I wrote before, it is important to the Professor, thats why it is important for me. I only use it during the training within our organisation. Not before, not after, not anywhere else. I usually dont even sign my e-mail with it. But the Professor even said, that I should print buisiness cards now saying "Datu Dieter Knüttel". He even asked our high ranking instuctors, that I shall be approached during class with this title. That made clear tu us, that it is of value to him. And that what counts for me. Even though, it is a title not used for FMA in the Philippines. I hope that helps. > Fuehrer, Reichschancellor und Grandissimo Capo di tutti Il Duce des > Sayonachi (don't make me use my laser vision) tenrec > > tenrec > tenrec@avcorner.com You see, like we in the west migtht be a little unsensitive towards filipino titles, but I, and probably most germans, would never use "Fuehrer" to sign off, not even while making jokes. But I understand, that this sensitivity towards the word "Führer" is different in other countries. I don´t feel offended nor do I want to offend somebody by this, it just shows, that the attitude and sensitivity towards titles and are different in different countries. Speaking of titles and Datu, there is a Datu Halford Jones in the FMA. Anyone know if his title came from Remy Presas or where ??? Just curious. Most thought that these referred to a Masters in Science but it stood for "Master Student" one who had through years of training and hard work figured out how to truly learn. I always liked that for once we stop learning we start to die. regards and respects, Bear ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 14:37:10 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Gathering Report: Part One A Howl of Greeting to All: On Saturday September 23rd, the Dog Brothers' Autumnal Equinox Gathering of the Pack was held. Uncharacteristically it rained the day before and the field was somewhat damp for the 27 fighters from Switzerland, Canada and throughout the US and the usual crowd of some 250-300 who showed up. The crowd size was slightly augmented by one of the larger showings in memory of Hermosa Beach Police both in uniform and not. The police chief and I chatted pleasantly for a bit as everyone gathered and it was time to begin the day. Yours truly served as Ringmaster, Nick "Pappy Dog" Papadakis (lead guitarist of the Almost Famous Fontanelles and a.k.a. Kombat Instruments Ltd_ Don't Cleave Bone Without It!) was Master of Arms (ie he ran the equipment bag and ran down those who inadvertently were wandering off with gear) and James Stacey was Timekeeper. At the Spring Gathering we saw the introduction of the aluminum training blades into the knife round with which the day traditionally begins. Then only a couple of fighters entered into the aluminum dimension, with the rest moving up from rattan dowels to the Sharkee knives. This time around many fighters entered into the aluminum dimension. These blades make for greater pain and greater risks. In my opinion a good hack with an aluminum blade can break the bones of the hand or maybe even the forearm. A well delivered thrust in the well respected opinion of someone who e-mailed me on the side before the Gathering runs the risk of piercing the skin. The bottom line is that the realism of the behavior of the fighters during the knife portion of the day was the best we have seen. Lameco man Charles Yao in particular showed excellent technique, skill and realistic behavior. The opening fight of the day between Top Dog and Rain Dog set the tenor for the day. One of the nice things about being Ringmaster is that one has the best seat in the house and I was impressed with just how continuously throughout the fight each man's bubble was pressing against the other's as some powerful shots were flying. Anyway, the dog killed a skunk last night (his third-- you think he would learn , , ,) and after dosing him in tomato juice this morning he is now ready to be taken for a proper bath (Cindy doesn't want this done in the house-- I can't understand why , , ,) so, the end, part one.
