I would like to comment on this. Unless I missed something, no one really commented on the substance of Sifu Simonet's instruction. My read was that the primary criticism was leveled against his character based upon marketing in the Paladin catalog. Well, excuse me, but haven't we missed something here? To present (hopefully) a more balanced perspective: I just finished watching the videos and I thought that they were quite good. I am admittedly not a Silat practitioner, but I am a senior student of the arts and know good instruction from mediocre from bad. Sifu S. was totally upfront regarding his lineage and made very clear that the tapes were his interpretation of Silat filtered through his unique set of conceptual lenses. He advised the viewer to consult Pak Victor or Guro Bob (both of whom receive all credit for his Silat development) if they want simon-pure Silat. For those of you who haven't seen the videos, I would recommend them along with the very dynamic Slam Set series by the same person. Sifu Joe is a very charismatic guy who has tons of power and provides a stimulating discussion of planes of energy, lines of attack and deflection, and a very humorous (if you like humor noir) patter during the instruction. There aren't many instructors who can integrate their varied martial arts experience in a seamless format and then teach it to others. I think Sifu Simonet has accomplished this at a high level in both his Silat videos and the Slam Set Mook Joang series. If you don't like him as a person, that's quite another story and certainly your right, but let's not dismiss the quality of his work based upon one persons reaction to his distribution companies marketing initiative. Any one else in the > Marines is there to help them accomplish that task. No. The sole purpose of the Marines, as in all infantry types is to do whatever the hell they are told to do. It doesn't have to be what they signed up for. It almost certainly isn't going to be what they want to do. >> Excellent discourse (though not very related to FMA!) and I don't really care to squabble about small points but here are a few; When one enlists they take an oath the uphold the US Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic as well receive and obey orders from officers and superiors. Doesn't matter if your a grunt or a pencil pusher or a nuclear engineer. The mission of the Marine Corps. rifle squad is to locate, close with and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver and to repel enemies assault by fire and close combat. Are they or the military always used for "military" missions? Obviously not, how and when US troops should be used is a matter for debate ...and ideally even public consensus. As for Marine MA hopefully they lean more towards the Lt. Col Bristol "pepper spray in eyes" type. Or maybe John Q. Public should write the Commandant and suggest none other than Dr. M. Gyi. If PC idiots had their way I'd swear they have'm wearing skirts going door to door selling cookies. But I understand, that this sensitivity towards the word "Führer" is different in other countries. I don´t feel offended nor do I want to offend somebody by this, it just shows, that the attitude and sensitivity towards titles and are different in different countries. Sorry 'bout that...but you made my point...using certain titles, as well as symbols, are not always taken the same way... tenrec (just tenrec) tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: MikHam777@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 21:56:30 EDT Subject: eskrima: attn: Crafty Mr. Denny, you mentioned that you were coming to Ohio to train w/ Dr. Gyi, what dates? Would you ever be interested in doing a seminar in Columbus, Oh? It's about 90 minutes from Athens. I am an Assistant Inst. at an IMB school there, and we have alot of interest in the DBMA there. There are only 6 Datus to my knowledge. Shishir, Kelly Worden, Rick Jornales, David Hoffman, Dietter, and myself(Tim Hartman). To the rest of the Digest: I don't understand how this topic keeps coming up? It doesn't matter what title we use, but what we make of it. We in Modern Arnis don't get this title when we reach a certan rank. It is after displaying leadership abliities, only then if the Professor thinks we are worthy he will bestow this title on some one. In July of 1999 I had respectfully turned the title down, because I did not think I was ready. In July of 2000 I was offered the title again after I tested for rank in front of my peirs. Remy told me that it was the highest rank tested for in over 17 years. After proving to myself and the people who witnessed the test I accepted the title. I will say this again and hopefully for the last time. We in the IMAF are given these titles by the grandmaster. If you have a problem with it, get out from behind your computors and confront the grandmaster with your isses Face to Face. If not then maybe you should keep our opinions to yourself.
