You have made a number of good observations, and I think the conclusions you have drawn are very likely right on target. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! What a load of rubbish. For those of us that have been travelling to the PI since the early 80's we know that true authentic FMA has always been alive and well. You just need to know where to look. From what I can gather most of the "masters" coming out of Stockton came from the Visayas. Where do you think they learned their art? For every 1 master that went to the US 10 stayed behind. Cebu is particularly rich in people that can teach you authentic FMA. True there are plenty of instructors ready for a fast buck but its the individuals responsibility to sort out the sh*t from the diamonds (sorry to put it so bluntly) Its interesting when people use the word "Kali". For my first couple of trips to the PI I never heard it. In the Visayas "Escrima" or "Arnis" was always used. IMO the word "Kali" only really started to get used after Dan Inostantos book "The Filipino Martial Arts" became popular. As one of the first of its kind, the book deserves high praise, however it contains a number of real discrepancies (even within the book) and has led to some false impressions. For those instructors who can trace their origins back to the Visayas none can really claim that they practise authentic, unadulterated, unchanged "Kali". Even saying it is the "mother art" is probably unrealistic. In Guro Dan's book Ben Lagusa claims "Ben Largusa separates himself from the title of Escrima master. He is a man of Kali, the older Filipino Art"....but kali is the mother or ancestral art" I just wonder how this has occurred. Ben Largusas primary instructor was Floro Villabrille who in Guro Dans book claims "That is the Villabrille System of Kali which is a composite of all styles of the islands" How can it be composite but also the "mother or ancestral art". In reality you just can't have both. Having travelled to Mindanao (General Santos)a number of times to visit friends I didn't see any real evidence of Kali there either(not that they would show me or I would ask). Much more likely they would be able to field strip an M16 then weild a kris with any real skill.
