For the most part instructors simply call it something to distinguish it from something else. If, boxing was like other martial arts we would have Ali-ryu, Frazier-ryu , etc., or perhaps Philladelphia-ryu as opposed to NYC-ryu. (I use the Japanese terminology for convenience sake, not that I think of any art as superior) FMA is simply that. If one person calls it Kali another Escrima and yet another Arnis what does it matter? In the end it breaks down into only two categories, fighters and hustlers. And the true fighters are very, very deadly no matter what they choose to call what they do. And the hustlers are usually very well off. And they serve a purpose with their temperature controlled academies, and beautiful uniforms... they keep the wannabes away from the real trainees, so that we can benefit from some reality. ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 18:00:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: to copyright or not to copyright... Well, I don't know if I'm late on this one, I just read #492 and haven't got to #495 yet, but here are my thoughts while they are still fresh. As some of you know, I will e-mail you and ask if I can use your post to place in the Full Contact Hawaii Message Board. I would like to say that anyone is free to use mine as long as said who it came from and I can review. Let's all be nice, play together, and ASK each other before we use other's post. Is there a way to legally enforce this? I don't know. I remember reading a few weeks back about a little debate about over why Marines wore leather neckpieces. So when I came across this on a website I thought I should send it in. Leathernecks The Marines long-standing nickname goes back to the leather stock or neckpiece, which was part of the Marine uniform from 1775 to 1875. The leather bands around their throats were intended to ensure that Marines kept their heads erect. For every 1 >master that went to the US 10 stayed behind. This is nitpicking, but the ratio is far greater than that. Except for the Manongs who try to make a living teaching the arts, most of the masters haven't heard of FMA seminars, books, tapes, whatever. A couple I have talked to actually find it amusing (very simple folk with simple needs) that there are people who will teach others who they do not know well. It's like arming a potential enemy, they say.
