Where do you think they learned their art? For every 1 >master that went to the US 10 stayed behind. Cebu is particularly rich in >people that can teach you authentic FMA. There were "Masters" from Luzon in the Stockton area: Toledo Style = Luzon Leo Giron = Luzon ...etc... Also see video tape on the Great Pinoy Boxers(www.mybarong.com), alot of boxers/panatukan experts did came from Luzon. >Its interesting when people use the word "Kali". For my first couple of >trips to the PI I never heard it. In the Visayas "Escrima" or "Arnis" was >always used. IMO the word "Kali" only really started to get used after Dan >Inostantos book "The Filipino Martial Arts" became popular. The word "Kali", note with most newer generation pinoys, is perhaps a foreign word prior to Dan Inosanto's book. To his defense, there are other words like Kalirongan, Kaliradman, Pagkali-kali. There is an Indonesian Pentjak-Silat art "Tjakalele". If broken down, tadjak is to kick, kalele could easily refer to the same art. In Ilongo and Hiligaynon, the word "kali-an" or "kinali" or "pagkali" refers to digging, or scraping. The word "kinalis" or "kinalisan" is an action where one uses an instrument to move just about anything around in a contained area like a "calaja"(Visayan wok) or a "caldero"(rice pot). "Kalis" is a blade and can be clearly seen in the "Weapons of Moroland" Shield being marketed to the public. Also, "Kalimutan" means to forget about it, "kalipatan" in Ilongo means one did not remember or recall, "pagka-libot" means to spin or turn. So, "Kali" used as a prefix in Ilongo can emphasize something or just about anything. IMHO, anyone or any group at a different time can emphasize an Art Form. Remember also that words and expressions change so rapidly in a country with so many influences. Nobody uses the word "bothoan" but many historians claim this was used. Even Hiligaynon or Deep Tagalog, the new generation rarely uses it unless in a formal letter or ocassion. So, arguing that "kali" was never used or not used or not so popular is a hypothesis or just another theory. One can easily conclude that the root word does exist. Now an argument could easily start among newer generation pinoys and non-pinoys that there is no one using this word to describe their art. Note that Pekiti-Tirsia is now "Kali", also "Kali Illustrisimo" does exist. I myself have seen documents/certificates/awards in Grandmaster Floro Villabrille's living room referring to Kali and Escrima dating back to the 1930's. This predates Guro Inosanto's book. My experience in the FMA was way back in the 70's under GM Carlito Lanada, Sr. I do not remember using a title for GM Lanada just sir or Kyud. I do not remember being given a title other than "are you OK?" "or hey you on the floor :-)" But now that I am trying to regain my youth and am practicing again what little I know I was thinking I should give myself a title and maybe some more titles to work toward. Since I remember very little of my training at Kuntaw Ng Pilipinas I figured my first title should be "John I know very little" But since I am very dedicated and train very hard and am purchasing any books and videos I can obtain by Sa Pinuno Steven Dowd I am going to work towards becoming "John I know a little more" Now since I am a very good learner and have a very willing brother in law to hit I mean to practice on I hope to progress to "John I think I know everything" Then when I am out of school and once again gainfully employed I hope to be able to attend one of the schools on or recommended by this list. At this time given my nature I will probably approach Datu, Guru, Grand Master etc. and invite them to show me something I do not already know being as I am "John I think I know everything" I imagine I will come full circle now in my quest for a title and will be once again be known as "Hey you on the floor" Seriously though thank you to Sa Pinuno Steven Dowd and all the others out there who have put there Arts in book and video form so those of us who would learn more can do so. Respectfully Kyud John ------------------------------ From: Mikal Keenan Date: 24 Oct 00 08:16:36 CDT Subject: eskrima: Slam Set etc. >> if you like humor noir This was my only objection to the Simonet tapes. I commonly view tapes like these with my family ... wife, son, daughter ... and prefer clean content. The "humor noir" got very lengthy at times and did not add to the delivery of the instructional content ... found myself waiting for the shpiels to end so we could get back to the goods. All other content, techniques, demos, were very much appreciated ... ++good IMHO. Did someone offer comments on the Torres tapeset? I'm thinking of buying them and would like to "hear" some opinions if you've got any.
