Bill, I must respectfully beg to differ. Some of you rec.martial-arts old timers may remember Ryan Parker, who was an Okinawan karate practitioner who did several demonstrations like this. I personally punched Mr. Parker in the throat repeatedly, with as much power as I could muster (I'm not Mas Oyama, but I wouldn't let a 12 year old girl punch me there).). If I were in on the act, I grant that such a thing could be faked pretty well, but I was punching for real. If it was a trick on his end, it fooled me, and it worked well enough to substitute for the real thing. :-) Tom ============================================================================ Tom Valesky -- tvalesky@patriot.net -- http://www.patriot.net/users/tvalesky ------------------------------ From: "Jonathan Broster" Date: Thu, 02 Nov 2000 16:21:04 GMT Subject: eskrima: Roberto Torres tapes Hi A while ago someone asked for information on the series of "Kalasag Kuntao Silat"tapes by Roberto Torres. The only ones to use exclusively the term kali are Ben Largusa & Floro Villabrille. This then beggars the question, why if his teachers used arnis/escrima (Angel abales, Leo Giron, Ellustrissimo) does DI use Kali? I have always assumed that as he is active in the promotion of Filipino culture as well as FMA he chose the term that was clearly not Western in origin. I guess that there are people based in CA who could maybe just go along to the Inosanto Academy and ask, rather than continue this endless thread. Surely rather than bicker about trivial issues like terminology we should be celebrating our shared interest. I am not a JKDist or a particular follower of Guro Inosanto but I am happy to admit that without his influence this list would not exist, and most of us would never have heard of eskrima, kali and arnis, much less be in position to argue about them. 3 - The talk about the various languages in the Philipines reminds me of a conversation I overheard a few years ago between Danny Guba of Doce Pares and a gentleman from the Filipino Embassy here in UK. I had heard them talking and not caught a word, so when they stopped I asked the embassy guy what language he spoke, "Tagalog," he replied,"but Danny speaks Cebuano!". When I asked what languae they had just been using he replied: "Oh that was English!" As I have said, I have personally pounded one guy in the throat and groin at full power, and saw the blows have no effect whatsoever. He could also resist certain locks that I have never seen anyone else stand up to (the #3 lock in the Defensor Method lock flow, for example). I was there. It was not illusion. I hit him as hard as I could. He took it. Ray I suspect you used the word "apparently" carefully. Dizon was supposed to have organized a match with one of the GM's of Cebu but didn't show up. As I have said before Villabrille was unknown to them, difficult to comprehend considering he claimed he was a "champion of the Philippines" >> The discussion of just what role Dizon and Villibrille played in each others lives has been open to strong debate for a long time, but I suspect that there just hasn't been anyone around for a long time with first hand knowledge of this subject (with all due respect to the contributors). I have heard Dan Inosanto insist in person on several occasions that Dizon was Villabrille's student, that Dizon lost a match to a Moro prince, and talked Villabrille into a match with the prince, which Villabrille supposedly won, but with some painful injuries. Cabales Serrada people insist that this match between the Moro prince and Dizon never in fact took place. What do I think? As a 3rd generation Serrada player, I am just thankful for the art that I received that was a result of the studies and practice of BOTH men...it doesn't matter to me who was what to whom; the arts we have today (Serrada Eskrima and Villabrille Kali) speak volumes for the talents of both great men. Is the head gear and body armor offered by the Doce Pares people also sanctioned for use in WEKAF tournaments?
