Kamut in Ilonggo and Cebuano means HANDS. example: Kinamutai (hand to hand), Kinamut (use of hands) & kamutay/kamutai (just of hands) Kamut in Tagalog means to SCRATCH. example: Kamutin (to scratch) & Kinamut (scratched) Hubud or Lubad in Ilonggo (not sure in Cebuano but I think it's the same) means to UNTIE. example: guin Hubud/Lubad niya ang higot (He/She untied the rope.) Hubad in Tagalog means to UNDRESS. example: Hubarin mo ang damit mo. (Take your dress off.) & Ang babae ay HUBAD. ( The woman is naked. Hope this helps the confusion. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I am confused. How can you call a Chinese person racist for describing something in his own culture? Perhaps I have missed something in the give-and-take, but I have seen no evidence of racism, and frankly, find your comment a bit silly, considering that you claim to be "ordained". Doesn't being ordained mean that you should have reached a certain level of tranquility and harmony? I've had numerous conversations with John privately, and even if he weren't Chinese, I would not call him racist. Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 23:14:43 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Dr Gyi seminar A Howl of Greeting to All: Dr. Maung Gyi taught this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Inosanto Academy. Its late and I must be brief, but please do not confuse this with lack of merit or sheer joy in the training. Friday was combat stick. Dr Gyi often refers to his system as a "cattle truck" or "dump truck" system, but it is said with a twinkle in his eye. A to be expected, the drills were utterly to the essence and supported by the usual extraordinary variety of stories. Saturday was hand knife-- small, concealable knives including folders. As always, little gems of insight concerning matters technical, psychological and emotional liberally sprinkled throughout the training. Sunday began with three hours taught by Pendekar Paul De Thouars of Bukti Negara Silat. Pdkr. Paul opened his session thanking Dr Gyi for saving his life and his brothers life in Indonesia where they were help in a Japanese prisoner camp towards the end of the war. A remarkable story combined with the remarkable coincidence that these men that these two men would meet so many years later. I had not seen Pdkr Paul teach for many years (since the late 1980s when he was teaching at the Inosanto Academy) and it was great to seem him, seemingly untouched by time, teach his special brand of hitting and leverage once again. For the second half of the day, Dr. Gyi taught letha yoga. He began by speaking with great eloquence about how soldiers need to be able to fix themselves and how a large percentage of martial artists cut their lives in the arts short by not knowing how to heal themselves of their injuries. Material included how to treat someone after a knockout (Dr. Gyi said although he won twice for every defeat, as a young man that he was KOd many times and credited this method for helping him tremendously) shoulders joints and so much more. I trained with him today and part of the day continued with the healing theme. Tremendous stuff! As for the rest of it , , , , stay tuned! As always, the depth and breadth of this man inspires me greatly. Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: "Chaplain Brian T. Henderson" Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 08:30:51 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Apologetics Hello Ray, I am a member of the Eskrima Digest and the PMAA Digest. First let me make it clear, that I really do appreciate this forum and all the work that you do to maintain it, and for that you have my greatest respect. However, in the last few digest, you have allowed a religious discussion to continue that is "Apologetic" in nature and is somewhat distracting due to its latest twist, "racism". While I find much of what they write fascinating as a Christian Theologian, Chaplain/Pastor, and martial artist, I am beginning to become alarmed with its direction. I feel a need to balance the futility of their arguments with the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but you have made it clear in past digest postings that this is not the appropriate forum for that. I appeal to both parties, to put an end to this discussion, as it could have lasting negative effects on the spirit, mind, and attitudes of some that are new to both the martial arts and their own spiritual quest. Enough is enough. This left FMA a long time ago and has >degenerated into an ethnic and religious war. > >Please take it somewhere else. Well Todd, You can make that point all you wish but the problem is that too many people have taken on the causes of their instructors instead of thinking for themselves. In some areas of RP and among some people there, these arguements are real and meaningful. Guro Tippie, said it so well in a recent post, people need to stop taking on the arguements of their instructors. I would also like to point to the comments of Gat Puno Baet, when he mentioned that the late GM Dizon was a member of the Laguna Doce Pares, then R. Terry thanked him for that piece of information, because when some people had tried to research the Doce Pares membership, they only contacted the people associated with organization located on the island of Cebu. What kind of research effort was that? Just take someones word and then drop the matter!?! GP Baet, and several others have told us that "kali" was not used in the Northern regions of Luzon and that they do not believe that "kali" is the mother-art of arnis and eskrima. That makes since to me since there are some 70-80 languages and dialects within RP. But there are some Westeners, who would argue that the indiginous Filipinos, are wrong!!! How can that be, if they were born and raised within the islands and speak one or more dialects? We, who have gotten our information 3rd or 4th hand from books, know more than the people who were born there and speak the languages? Hmm... It is politics my friend, so I just read and smile at the comments made by some of our fellow ED posters. It really is not worth my time and energy to comment any more on most of the stuff put forward as informed information. After-all, when I wrote about the use of a certin terminology, I was castigated by one fellow and refered to a GM. Another wrote that he did not want to insult a GM. That kind of logic is what keeps these fights going. So write as many posts as you wish, the tantric stuff is not going to go away!!!
