John Chow told me a year ago that I needed a bigger stick and that the one I had been working with was way too small to protect myself with.. Mind you they were the heaviest pare of Kali sticks that I could find.. But he reckoned as I am a women the bigger the stick the better the protection.. Now how dose this come back to you.. Hahah Well when I was in calif last week I saw a video at my friends house of one of his students competing in one of your Recent "dog brother's beat the heck out of each other for fun sparing days.." And there you were with this Huge Blue stick that you were using to keep the combatants at bay with and in order as they spared. Can I barrow it to keep my ex husbands at bay... Hehehe Johnaleen bows deeply to you.. The awarding of "Datu" title is a serous matter. Usually accompanied by state ceremonies and the lsit of recipients published in all major newspapers. Special cetificates and badges will be awarded including one for the car so that everyone know there is a Datu sitting in the car, special monthly allowance will be given by the government in recognition of your contribution. In Malaysia, among all the hundreds of different schools of Silats, only a handful of Silat masters being conferred Datuship. It is extremely tough even for a local muslim silat mahaguru to obtain a Datuship, not to mention foreigners. I believe, similar criteria exists in Philipine and Indonesia. The only easy way to get a Datuship is to become a politician and has a few hundred thousands dollar spare cash for "donations". If a foreigner did receive a Datuship, I bet all the local TV and newspapers will be running the stories for days and whoever he is, will become a household name. Sincerely, S. H. The word that I submitted was "caliz" not "chaliz". It was from the entry in the "Tagalog-English Dictionary" by Leo James English, C.Ss.R. (Phil. Copyright 1986 by Congregation of The Most Holy Redeemer; published by National Bookstore), found on page 281: "kalis Sp. (caliz) n. (1) sword; saber. (2) chalice; a sacred vessel used at the Mass. (3) fig. a cup of sorrow, grief, etc." I may have inadvertantly posted that the meaning of the word "caliz" was sabre, but I have not checked a Spanish dictionary (and don't have one at the moment), and so I may be in error. In the above, the Filipino word "kalis" is attributed to the Spanish, apparently in all definitions in this entry and the etymological entry does not indicate that the word "caliz" itself means sabre or sword. >In addition, one reply even stated that if this term involved the Philippines- it may be the other way >around! >Especially for words around the 16th century. >The Southern Philippine word "kalis" may have been appropriated by the Spanish/Portugese to >mean a sword. Historically, the Spanish especially the Conquistadores appropriated some words >of native tribes and used their terms for that region A Philippine studies teacher and I also discussed this and a similar scenario regarding the assimilation of the word "caliz" into Spanish (which, again, may not exist in Spanish) from the Moors a few months ago...around the time of the last "kali-the word" thread outbreak...we haven't ruled anything out yet... >Glad to see a discussion of history in the eskrima digest forum. I'll make to include a mention of >this in my book on Filipino History. Please tell us when it is to be published, I would like to see it...also perhaps you can forward your comments to the publishers/editors of the Tagalog-English dictionary above...just as with the editors of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, I am certain that the editors of this dictionary could make use of your findings... Thanks for the information... tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 10:56:59 -0000 Subject: eskrima: Dan Inosanto seminar report A sold out seminar in Edinburgh was host to Guro Inosanto this Remembrance weekend. Assisted by Erik Paulson he gave another sensational seminar that covered Jun Fan, FMA, groundwork. Guro consistently praised Erik Paulson using his attributes as an example of where he wants his students to go. He kept reiterating that he didn't know at time what art Erik was in and that Erik can blend from one art to another. If they start in shoot they end in BJJ and so on. The two of them certainly have a special relationship and Guro is sent into fits of giggles due to little antics that Paulson does. On the first day we initiated with Jun Fan focus mitt training before moving into the Loy Da series. Then we moved into the La Coste Walis (sp) techniques that contain the sapu's before going to single knife using the responses to the Illustrimo 1 - 8 feed. This was followed by a 90 minute session with Sifu Larry Hartsell who took us through his style of focus mitt combinations Day 2 saw the day initiated by Sifu Hartsell working his lock flow with take downs. This section was absolutely electric and Sifu Hartsell was at his best. As if this wasn't good enough we were then to witness a Judo demonstration by top British coach Billy Cuzak and some of his players including World Champion Graeme Randall. Their type of Judo is far flung from the club judo most of us see and was amazing to see. George Kerr, then gave a talk of his experiences in Japan in the 50's and how this led him to change the face of British Judo. Guro Inosanto initiated with Silat blending La Coste with Serak coming off the jab cross into the sapus and then finishing on the ground. Erik then took us through some cardio workouts from the guard involving passing, focus mitts etc. Having read Terry Tippies account of the plum session experience he'd had with Guro Inosanto I asked the question of how he made the hubud work against the plum. This led to him demonstrating the principle to great effect. Another fantastic seminar in Edinburgh. Rick Young's event is something special nowadays and the atmosphere is one of a large family getting together. We filmed this last Friday and Saturday, two long days. I'm happy with the way it went, and so is Paladin. I had some great people to help me, and in addition to the inside instructional part, we filmed a lot of out side shots doing little scenes where the person being attacked uses the stuff I was teaching outside. Most of these were me, but I had Yi Saeng do three, and another friend, Deb, do three of them too. Some of these scenes turned out great. We all went the extra mile to make them good. Everyone took some good shots and hit the ground hard to make them good. I feel it is a very good basic self-defense video. The primary audience is someone with no MA background, or the martial artist that wants to know a bit more about the street and what works there. I wanted to fill a gap that Paladin had. It was a lot of fun to film, and I'm glad we finally got it done. Now I can work on different projects. Only bad thing is that it will be at least 12 months, maybe longer before it is released.
