I know you guys care about speed, power, technique, economy of movement.....all that peripheral stuff. We have much more important concerns....like how our hair looks when we are fighting, and whether or not (horrors) we will perspire through our t-shirts or break a nail. We come to training to show off our hairdos and training outfits. Thank goodness our contribution to the FMA is finally being recognized. This is very helpful, because I had known that the American Armed Forces were racially segregated from revolutionary time through 1948. I also knew that African-Americans were deemed incapable of flying airplances by many in the command structure of the Army Air Corps at the outset of WWII, so I was curious about the the nickname and it's origin. So it ewould seem that General Pershing, was about as open-minded as a fellow could be in the early part of thie century and he would have very likely studied the native martial arts of the Philippines out of both respect and curiousity. As I said in my earlier post - I can add any information to question about General Pershing, being awarded the Datu title, but from the two posts that I have quoted, it would appear that he was a man who was not afraid to work with the "exotic people" of his time. Pershing, by Frank E. Vandiver, 1977. Perhsing has served from 1895 to 1897 with the 10th Cavalry --the famous Buffalo Soldiers--in Montana. when he went to West Point as a company commander in late 1997, the cadets found himto be a strict and demanding officer. Vandiver writes: "Unpopularity won a nickname for Pershing, one born in racist contempt. The cadets knew he belonged to the 10th Cavalry and so began to call him "Nigger Jack." In time it softened to "Blackl Jack," but the intent remained hostile." A quick skim of the many pages about his service in the Philippines, did not reveal any mention of his ever being named a Datu, though as commander of the troops on Mindinao, he held many conferences with local leaders, and such a ceremonial recognition is certainly possible. Unfortunately, Vandiver makes no mention at all of Pershing's design in 1913 of the last Cavalry Sabre, but its design --at least to my eyes-- seems to draw from Filipino and Malay swords. It it less curved than the sabre of 1860, slightly thicker in the fore part of the blade, and similar to photographs I have seen of large kris. Of course, Pershing served as military attache to our embassy in Tokyo immediately after his years in the Philippines, where his interest in swords may have also been fired. Whatever, the 1913 Sabre is the most formidable martial sword in the US armory. Happy research.
