I recently came back to their webpage and found this new button. It seems that it was not really meant as a beauty pageant but as a place to feature and honor women practicing the FMA. I guess it was the fault of whoever the author was for posting this very late and using the word "Pageant" for it has certain connotations that are not appropriate and not politically correct. Only the word "pageant" was there but the word "beauty" was ot used by the author. It was an inference by me that is why I wrote "sort of beauty pageant" on my previous post. Then again, it could be my fault for referring the site immediately to you for it may not have been ready for public viewing already. An acquaintance of mine just sent me the URL. It was probably belongs to a friend of his. I'll ask him again. If the author of this page is on this list. Kindly clarify the matter for us please. And I apologize to whoever was offended and to the author of this site if I referred others to your page prematurely (that is, if it was really prematurely). Nagpapaumanhin, E. Aragon *********************** Historical Lakambinis The word "lakambini" or "mutya" in Filipino means muse. She is much more than a creature of beauty. She is an inspiration, a woman of strength of character as well as of courage. The lakambini is chosen not just for her beauty but also for her leadership for she is respected by all, men and women, for she does not influence by seduction or by her allure but by her integrity, honor, wisdom and fire. Two women come to mind as the being epitome of the Lakambini ng Kali, Arnis at Eskrima. The first would be Gabriela Silang. Her name has so much weight that the foremost militant and activist feminist group in the Philippines, GABRIELA, is named after her. They fight for women's rights and rally for socio-political change in the nation. The real Gabriela Silang was a warrior. Her husband, Diego Silang, led a revolt against the Spaniards in the Ilocos regions of the Philippines. After his early death, the Ilocanos were low in morale and greatly discouraged for they suffered massive losses and there was none who were to take his place. Gabriela, his wife, rose up to fill the void in leadership. With very few guns and armed mostly with bolos and sharpened bamboo poles, she continued the fight against their oppressors. She was a true warrior and martial artist for she did not hide but fought among and amindst the men. The gravity of what she did could be greatly appreciated in this, this occurred long before the Katipunan or KKK was formed. Unlike the KKK which was almost a nationwide movement, this was among the earlier uprisings against the Spaniards, where you did not get any backup or support from the neighboring provinces or regions if you were routed by the enemy. It was indeed do or die. Unfortunately, she did die but she has left her mark on the Filipino woman and on the Filipinos as a whole. During a time when women usually stayed at home and were almost never heard, she became a leader and an inspiration among men, a true lakambini. The second and most recent lakambini would be former President Corazon Aquino. During the dictatorship of former President Ferdinand Marcos, her husband Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, was among the leaders of the opposition. He was exiled to the United States and was later assassinated when he went back home to the Philippines. It was during the ensuing political turmoil that the Filipinos united to rally behind the cause fought for by Ninoy Aquino. Marcos called a snap election and Corazon "Cory" Aquino, who was a home-maker during that time, was chosen to run for President against the strongman Marcos. At first, it seems that the opposition party just wanted to use her name and her relationship to Ninoy to win the elections. But later, during the People Power revolution, she was among those who fought and rallied peacefully protecting the revolutionary army of Minister (now Senator) Juan Ponce Enrile and General (now Former President) Fidel Ramos. Though she was not a martial artist per se, she demonstrated the highest form of the Filipino Martial Arts, fighting without violence and the unnecessary shedding of blood, fighting using prayer and faith in God. So the Lakambini ng Kali, Arnis at Eskrima 2000 should be like her two historical predecessors: inspiring, skillful, brave and full of wisdom. She may not yet be that mature yet in the FMA, but she shows much potential. She may not yet be that prominent yet in the world of Martial Arts but she does her contribution by helping promote the Filipino Martial Arts and the values of equality, honor, love, discipline among others. And though a lot of the contributions of women are sadly not recognized, this page is meant to put the female practitioner of the FMA to her rightful place of prominence ------------------------------ From: TaoArt@aol.com Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 00:26:01 EST Subject: eskrima: Kudos Sunny, Thank you for your pointed post. It is often difficult to explain to people that it is annoying to be regarded for our looks instead of our skill without being labelled as a "femi-nazi". I've had men tell me that the reason I have so many men in my school is because I am a six foot blonde. Funny, though... those guys never stick around. The men who do train with me are respectful and humble. I have had men visit our school and decide not train here because they found out that *I* was the head instructor (not the male black belt instructor who has been my student for six years). But an interesting note... I had another guy admit to me that he almost didn't train with us when he saw that the head instructor was a woman - until he sparred me. Then his assumptions went out the door (or were pushed out, as he said :) Meghan Gardner Guard Up, Inc. www.GuardUp.com "Always carry love in your heart and a knife in your pocket." me ------------------------------ From: Kilap@aol.com Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 01:07:10 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: misc Mik writes: << On a related note, the Germans gave the Black soldiers who fought in the >> trenches of France the nickname "Hell Fighters." Mitakyoaseh [Lakota: "We are all the same people."], I don't have a reference handy, but I think the spelling maybe a little off. Not that your interpetation is wrong just perhaps a little narrow...usually it is "All my relations" as in every living thing (and then some). If there is an interest in things Sioux perhaps one should visit American Indian Relief Council (AIRC) home page and maybe make a donation so that some in the poorest county in America have a decent meal for "Thanksgiving".
