Please reply to my email address below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! Earl ebaylon@uci.edu >> I don't know if you're interested in Silat or not, Earl, but Victor de Thouars' school is only about a half hour from you in Bellflower. He teaches Pentjak Silat Serak. His wife teaches Aikido. They also do some Kun Tao Silat de Thouars (and have Willem de Thouars in regularly). Visit the following website for more information on the school: http://hometown.aol.com/silatpony/vdt_academy_home.html My 2 cents ... you should check it out. Pak Vic is an incredible martial artist and Silat Serak is an incredible system. If I lived anywhere within about 5 hours of the school, I would be there training as much as I could. Unfortunately, I live in Ohio so I'm only able to train with Pak Vic at seminars. Regards, Mike ------------------------------ From: "Branwen Books Inc." Mr. Aragon: Thank you for the clarification, and also for the information about Lakambini. >The word "lakambini" or "mutya" in Filipino means muse. She is much >more than a creature of beauty. She is an inspiration, a woman of strength >of character as well as of courage. While I refuse to be judged solely on my looks or physique, from your explanation it is not that sort of "pageant". We could all (men & women) do worse, perhaps than to strive for the characteristics of the lakambini. (i would say that Gabriela Silang and Corazon Aquino were Roaring Girls (tm) - different terms for the same idea - I'm glad to know the Filipino version :) thanks, Jocelyne ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 09:36:11 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Yay Beauty! Well I guess in general we gave them hell, eh cousin? I don't have a reference forya but what I related came from WWII documentary on minorities in American wars ... some related info after next comment ... >> Mitakyoaseh [Lakota: "We are all the same people."], > I don't have a reference handy, but I think the spelling maybe a > little off. Spelling is entirely my own attempt to convey the term as related to me by a Sioux leader from S. Dakota this summer. Sometimes people contrive things for the sake of the audience, eh? > Not that your interpetation is wrong just perhaps a little > narrow... Sorry that you perceive it that way. As far as I'm concerned, the non-human animal creatures that people kill everyday are also people :-) ... this extends to all sentient beings, ultimately to things that many might consider "non-living" but which we are inexorably part of. > usually it is "All my relations" as in every living > thing (and then some). I can relate :-) "All my relations" was part of the explanation originally given to me ... this was generalized to the mixed crowd to mean "We are all the same people." My spelling, yah, but not my words. > If there > is an interest in things Sioux perhaps one should visit HREF="http://www.airc.org/">American Indian Relief Council > (AIRC) home page and maybe make a donation so that some > in the poorest county in America have a decent meal for > "Thanksgiving". <<<>>> IMHO, "Thanksgiving" should focus on giving thanks to those who taught newcomers how to survive in this land. <<<>>> What you suggest is very definitely a good cause. My previous wife is Oglala Sioux. Our son Keota has learned most of what he knows about Native America from me though, as humble and limited as my knowledge may be. I now try to encourage him to seek more knowledgeable sources and claim that part of his heritage (my paternal family includes Chippewa). My Sioux father-in-law was one of the coolest people I've ever known ... cool in the sense of humility, fairness, down-to-earth, straightforward/no B.S. but tolerant, etc. Ex-Marine hellhound :-) ... speaking of which, the most decorated group of American soldiers have come from Native America. Don't believe, just check it out ... this too was related to me by the leader who schooled me about what I attempt to communicate as "mitakyoaseh". Originally I spelled it phonetically, e.g., "mee-tah-kee-yoh-ah-say" ... but that's too much typin' man!!!:-) Thanks Travis. My feeble attempt to Romanize/Anglicize the non-Anglican expression might not work for all, but hey, ju kno what I meen :-) Be well.
