I've seen several videos out on the market, but attempting to discern which ones are truly functional and which aren't is a task in itself. I have seen a set of videos based on Kali Illistrisimo and I believe within the last set of that series, a style of knife fighting refered to as "Tulisan" is demonstrated. I wanted to know if anyone knew if this style of knife fighting is effective compared to some of the other styles within the filipino arts. Also, can those techniques that are taught in that series (or any video for that matter), can they be translated to a folding knife (a folding knife having a blade no large than 3 or 4 inches)? Or are those techniques specifically design for large knives and/or bolo knives/swords? Walter V. __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. Well now mr. mischief :) I don't have a problem with admiring a person's outer beauty. It's when physical appearance becomes the focus to the detriment of both the person's other qualities and self-esteem. Girls who starve themselves to suit "fashion" or men who are considered geeks or losers because they are not "perfectly" sculpted is dumb. Plus have you ever really looked at professional bodybuilders? It's *creepy*...all those veins and things...and I don't understand about how you can do it "professionally". No offense to anyone who does this, or girls who want to be in beauty pageants...as long as you're not hurting yourselves or anyone else. Sadly, however, it usually does get taken to the extreme...and in the case of beauty pageants it is more often than not young girls who suffer...don't even get me started on those pageants where they have 5 year old girls dolled up like mannequins... >Hell, what's wrong with a bodybuilding > contest for men? And what's the difference? > Woof, the mischievious Crafty Dog To answer your Q., IMHO they encourage an abnormal focus on specific (and often biased) interpretations of beauty and/or physical accomplishment, and they encourage creepiness. they are creepy. :) jocelyne ------------------------------ From: "Marc Denny" Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 15:27:41 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Doggy boo boos A Howl of Greeting to All: Badger asked: > > This is primarily directed to the DB on the list: > > I just got the 6 tape set and really enjoyed it. Marc (Crafty), if you're > listening, when were those tapes made (mid 90s?) The fights were from the late 80s and early 90s and editing was done while my knee was broken (92- 93) and were released fall of 93. Are you and Eric still > fighting occasionally? I've been on sabbatical for a year and don't know whether I will be fighting again or not. I've had a lot of injury problems this past year-- but they may be clearing up. I really vacilate on this. Dr. Gyi says I shouldn't, but I have a new staff game I'd like to research. Also, after several years of fighting only double stick, I recently picked up the single stick and felt the blood warm up a bit. We'll see come spring. Eric is still fighting full tilt and I would say that the most recent Gathering was one of his strongest performances in years. What do you find as the biggest obstacle to > fighting now that you're getting along in age (Speed? Reactiontime?) Perhaps we can get Eric to post on his perspective. As for myself, I feel that by fighting siniwali against single or double stick allowed me to offset declines in hand, foot and perceptual speed (and clarity!) with footwork and angles and generalship allowing for the expression of timing masked by the snakey stick. (roughly how to move before and after contact) Given the power involved with staff, the snakey stick is extra important. > And finally, have you ever had any serious injuries (beyond a few > stitches?) other than the gushing head wound on the first of the > tapes? (how did that guy turn out? Stitches? looked like his head was > really caved!) Injuries: broken hands are not rare, an occasional wrist broken, an occasional TKO, rarely a broken rib, one perforated ear drum (staff fight) and one split knee cap-- that was bad. Reduced IQ? Who knows? The gushing head wound on DB#1 was Salty Dog. He is fine and probably has had a couple of hundred fights since then. Not only does he take a good shot, he hits really hard. > - -Badger > Arnis Lastra, Arnis Lanada '79 Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: "Michael Koblic" Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 16:02:42 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Women Instructors ". I have had men visit our school and decide not train here because they found out that *I* was the head instructor (not the male black belt instructor who has been my student for six years). But an interesting note... I had another guy admit to me that he almost didn't train with us when he saw that the head instructor was a woman - until he sparred me. Then his assumptions went out the door (or were pushed out, as he said :)" This is unfortunately true in other walks of life: 1) When I was learning to drive, the school allocated to me a new instructor. The desk staff were rather reticent about letting on who the new instructor was. I caught on when she turned out to be a woman. They assumed that I would mind, which I did not (I was enlightened at the age of 17 already!). The woman was a superior teacher who got me through the test where the previous male instructor could not. 2) At the ACLS course in Atlanta I made a positive effort to get into a group led by a woman instructor. I assessed the instructors prior to the break up into the small groups (they all gave short lectures). The four males competed who had a larger one. The woman was a superior communicator who did not involve her ego. As a result one learned much more from her. I guess it goes to the thread which run here not so long ago: You need not be a champion of the world to be a good teacher. If your teacher helps you develop your game to its maximal potential who cares what his or her game is like, or whether she is a woman, man or that blue 3ft smurf someone mentioned? Eskrima: The focus of Escrima is to be able to adapt and use any available object as a weapon to use as a means of survival. In modern times, most attackers will be armed with some kind of weapon - Escrima is the perfect counter training to take, as it teaches one to use whatever is at hand - a pen, an umbrella, a stick on the ground. If an object/weapon is not easily at hand, then Escrima covers the use of the human body's natural weaponry - our hands, feet, elbows, head, and other hard points - Ok so what's the difference....... when you bodybuilder and do body building then go into compatitions..... that's what you do your building your muscles so that you can go out and show them off its what you worked for and its the main reason you go and compete in bodybuilding competitions...... when you do you do eskrima or arnis........ and you are in a compatitions, you are showing your skills with the sword knives and sticks.......... i did not see anywhere in any of the dictionary's any reference to going into competition and with the intent of showing off my body or what i am wearing that day as part of being able to take my sword stick or knife and do what its intended to be used for in an Eskirma or Kali Competition...... Hell, what's wrong with a bodybuilding contest for men? And what's the difference?" I never thought I would take the PC side but here goes: The beauty contest rewards no effort or achievement. You are judged on the accident of your birth. I feel sorry for the losers - it is not their fault they lost. They are made to feel miserable for no good reason. Winning seems to foster a sense of self-worth which in many cases is out of proportion to reality. The bodybuilding contests are IMHO pointless exercises but at least they involve some effort on the contestant's part.
