Ray - -------------------------------------------------------- WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Nov. 10 - Leaders of Florida's Seminole tribe filed suit today in federal court, claiming that the use of arrows on election ballots was demeaning and intimidating to Native Americans. The suit alleges that nearly 19,000 members of the tribe, who had intended to vote for George W. Bush, became so distraught at the sight of the arrows that their hands began to shake uncontrollably, causing them to mispunch the ballot. The chief of the tribe noted that many of these people left the polls in tears, and came to him saying they "knew they had punched more than one hole in the ballot." The suit calls for the scalp of the local election officials who designed the ballot. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 15:00:49 PST Subject: eskrima: combat drills ? IMHO some (many?) of the drills we practice do not fully prepare us for all out combat situations. e.g. in flow sparring, we do a one for one, I attack as you block, then you attack as I block, then repeat that sequence N times. In lock-n-block one is the feeder while the other is the feedee. In neither case is one practicing actual strategies that may be needed to quickly and appropriately end those highly intense interpersonal encounters. Yes, contact sparring can help develop that. But what drills or teaching methods have you tried to help the student develop their 'eye' for combat? It is of historical interest to those of us in the Dizon lineage. NOTE: I'm NOT a DB member. I just happened to have attended the last gathering. I was one of those guys that really did a lot of work on my stick game (yes I'm quite the sumbrada guy), but I've owned the Dog Brother tapes for several years. Over the years - talking with Burt Richardson, emailing Marc Denny while I was in Japan - I began to stick fight a little bit harder. Mostly padded stick stuff. I finally met Dog Brother Ian Wilde in Japan, and I was completely sold on the DB mindset. It's not about beating the hell of people - it's about learning, and experiencing martial arts. It's actually respect, you're not out there to hurt people. You go hard out of respect for the person that you are working with. Another thing that I learned was that I was sparring too hard, too often. They don't do that fighting like you see at the gathering all the time. More drilling, more technical work, and light sparring. This last gathering in September was my first time actually attending a gathering. I was so overwhelmed. I loved every minute of it. Everyone was so nice, it was such a good time. I don't plan to every miss another one. My recommendation to you Badger is that you come to a gathering and watch. Don't fight - just sit and watch. You have to see it!!!!!!!!! I've been doing martial arts for nearly 20 years, I've boxed, kickboxed, grappled, fought in NHB, done JKD, Kali, Silat.....you have to see this. You have to meet Marc, and meet Eric. The really present martial arts in the right light. I EXPERIENCED martial arts, just by meeting these guys. This is the way MA should be done. Everyone just trains, the egos are nowhere to be found. Badger I hope I see you at the next gathering...if you need a place to stay during that time just send me and email.
