"In response to Tuhon Bill's comment and others about spanish styles of blade fighting, I'm reminded that Anthony De Longis and Robert Chapin reportedly taught a type of stage combat (theatrical) at the Inosanto Academy. For those among the group who are also Highlander the TV series fans, they may recall an epi called "Duende". This was described as being based on a type of Spanish Rapier and Dagger dueling, in an ancient Spanish court fighting grid known as the Mysterious Circle. Don't know if this is historically accurate, but the style had some elements similar to espada y daga, although very stylized, and artificial. By that I mean more like a pre-arranged dance, feeding moves to each other. But this 'style' left out several of the natural alive hand moves, was discontinuous, losing the 'touch', or contact flow, here and there. Supposedly, De Longis was an expert at this type of dueling practice, based on a real system." The fighting system described in this episode is known as La Destreza. It was designed by Carranza and further developed by Narvaez. It concentrates on application of science to fencing, particularly geometry. The circle, described by Thibault in 1628, is simply an aid to mastering this system. It teaches to move with the opponent in a circular fashion to a) get off the line of the incoming attack and b) to create more favourable angles of attack (not unlike escrima). It is my understanding that it differs in this from the Italian school which attacks linearly "into the attack". I know little about fencing, there is boud to be somebody here will know more. The best explanation of the Spanish school I know of is on www.classicalfencing.com/articles , read the articles by Ramon Martinez. It is my understanding that the Spanish school was highly respected and anything but artificial. _____________________________________________ "Duende is also a term related to Flamenco Dancing, for what that's worth." The episode in question explains that Duende is a state of mind achievable through mastery and total immersion in an activity, e.g. flamenco dancing. I believe you can achieve Duende playing ping-pong if you try hard enough... _______________________________________ "As a further postscript, it was interesting to note that the actor playing 'MacLeod', Adrian Paul, reportedly was doing a movie in the orient, and according to the 'fan' grapevine studied some stick fighting for the role. In some of the last epis of the final season, you see some double stick fighting," AP is a bona fide martial artist. Being an ex-dancer and soccer player his footwork is outstanding. I believe that both Bob Anderson (the original swordmaster on the "Highlander") and F. Braun McAsh felt that he was the best actor swordsman they ever worked with. I am not sure how good APs sticks are. The two fight scenes are short and filmed in a close up so very little is seen of the movements. This is usually a sign that either one or the other fighter are not too comfortable...(cf. the "Queen of swords" where the fight scenes are terrible and almost entirely in close up - not even Valetin Pelka and Peter Wingfield can save this series!) _____________________________________________ " Of course for the dramatic part, there was a whole lot of 'swords hitting swords', which is not reality, but other than that, fun stuff." You've gotta do that to touch off the sparks (try fencing with an electric wire up your trouser leg!) :-) :-) I am told that AP did a lot of extra work for the movie "Highlander 4" to get the fight scenes even better, but I haven't seen it. I bet you guys just lapped THAT up. I wonder if he went to Europe or Australia he would say the same thing? Having travelled fairly extensively around Thailand, Indonesia and the PI it has been my experience that the locals have a tenandcy to tell you what you want to hear. Sometimes its the truth sometimes its a fabrication out of couresy. Maybe the best "martial artists" are in the US but from personal experience some of the "best fighters (pound for pound)" are still found in Asia. ------------------------------ From: Mikal Keenan Date: 26 Nov 00 13:32:34 CST Subject: eskrima: What Type??? >> "I hearya hombre ... most days I'd rather spend in the >> gym than in the office. **A certain type**(MY EMPHASIS) >> is becoming bolder in their harassing ways and me, I >> gotta be with the office "etiquette" if I want a career." > What "certain type" is that Mikal? So, since you made that > statement, exactly what "type" are you talking about? > Sorry for the puffing, everyone. I just felt bold > behind the protection of my keyboard... Bold? You is woofing/puffing up the wrong tree. Since you insist on a definition, let's call this type the type which likes to invite all to its private parts regardless of gender at any time in any place in your face deal with it they're here ... the type that thinks that a humble man is humpable and fire him or kill him if humpable he ain't ... the type that insists that everyone be their way if they want to keep their job and/or advance in life ... the type that doesn't care about qualifications or decency, just bend ovah pleez ... the type that has respect only for their own efforts for preferential treatment, supported by the new liberal mantra "Political Correctness". How's that for starters Jay? Need any more definition? If you want to say anything more about it, why not send it direct to me and stop wasting the bandwidth here ... it ain't got squat ta do with FMA, IMA, CMA or any other MA, OK? Better yet, just drop it because this is B.S. "Loud and boisterous"? Who cares. "Racial"? I got damn near every race in my family buddy Asian, African, Caucasian, Native American ... talk about it with my frustrated, not often-enough sober, brick-laying dad who had enuf after the sixth grade ... or my siblings who fought all over S.E. Asia only to return to get spat on and held back because of the color of their skin. Then there's me, I've wrestled for a couple of decades to get opportunities and degrees that I was more qualified for than many of my "peers" ... some of whom got promoted for their perverted "butt-kissing" ways and racial identification while I, the hard-working, got held back (Thanks for your helpful ideas Mik) downsized or fired ... didn't fit in, too straight or moralistic, not fair-skinned enuf, "too smart for his own good" (?), blah-blah-de-frickin-blah. You're way off base pal. - -Mik Ray ... I won't say another word re: anything other than martial "stuff".
