How weak would it be with a blade, perhaps the true intent? Could easily be replaced by an attack to an ankle, eh? Also maybe unexpected in transition from a high line attack on the other side. We tend to go through rattan pretty quickly, and a good durable rattan would be a great thing to find. Back in the day (mid to late '70's), a favorite stick among the eskrimadors I trained with was made of Indonesian rattan, which was dense, thick, and durable. However, I don't know of any source for Indonesian rattan these days. Off the subject a bit, I just returned from a session with my teacher, Rob McDonald, whom I've known for around 25 years. It got me thinking that the same guys I trained with back in the '70's are the same guys I train with today. The bonds we've developed in the FMA's, at least for us, seem to be strong...granted, those bonds have been tested from time to time, but the strength of the relationships continue to hold up, and although we're all getting on in years these days, we're still in there making a good showing for ourselves, with friendships that endure and grow. Three of my training partners and I decided to give it a try. We wore the three weapon fencing helmet (the heavy helmet), forearm and elbow pads. The hand protection was little Kwon gloves that don't cover the thumb. We limited it to 50% power and mainly avoided low shots because some of us forgot cups. Even though this is nothing compared to what a lot of you regularly spar like, but it was a lot for me to handle. I was very scared starting out. I was dreaming about broken fingers that would keep me from writing my finals. But I was more curious than afraid. I had my partner hit me on the arm to see what it was like. I started laughing at myself for being afraid. Then we went at it. It was a blast. During my third match, my partner did without the forearm pads, and I took the pad off of my live hand. (I left the other one on because the rec center was closing and we wanted to continue.) We sparred single vs. single, then single vs. empty hand, then a reversal of single vs. empty hand and finally double. Now the question. After letting it sink in, I remember being really defensive. I couldn't initiate any offense without getting whacked in the helmet. Could anyone help me out? I would hit the hand trying to initiate an entry but my opponent would hit me in the head. Can anyone suggest any offense drills? Or should I just keep experimenting and training the way I am? Did anyone else feel this way their first time? Thanks, Eric _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web.
