Man, I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this. I remember the first time we did it too. Oh, boy. There wasn't much talking that day. Just a few over-punned jokes and some nervous laughter. We all had serious faces on that day. Man, those were the days. I wish I could fight Stuart or James the way they were back then and how I am today. Eric, you just made my day with that memory. Welcome ot the club. Just to let you know, that feeling will never end. Now that you have had a taste, you are addicted to it. You tasted the fear, and explored your curiosity. I bet now, you are more curious and more hungry, huh? Congratulations, compadre. >>During my third match, my partner did without the forearm pads, and I >>took the pad off of my live hand. More will come off eventually. I assure you, I can hear/see the hunger in your voice/text. >>Can anyone suggest any offense drills? Or should I just keep >>experimenting and training the way I am? There are many things that you can do...but the best is to just put in the time stickfighting. We record almost all of our fights and have tapes full of fights from beginning to end. Watch your fights and you'll notice what you need to do. Congratulations again, Eric. In a sport fight similuation, you can continue hitting your partner, no matter which part of the body your partner have hitted you or you hitted him. Furthermore, since you have full padding on(that is you can't feel the pain of hitting), I suggest you use your alive hand to block or even graple your partner's stick, and at the same time you charging in and hit him to the head and as well as using "Abanico" techniques to hit his temples. In a real fight similuation, it really depends on what you are using, if you use a stick, than you should stop after you hit your partner or your partner hitted you, since a successful strike by a ratten will break the bone, even if you hit to the hand. If you similuate "Blade" fight, that is if the stick hit or even slash the body(not very hard slash, since the blade suppose to be razor sharp), then the fight is over. In summary, a sport fight, you can give mulit-hittings, in a real fight, you need only one or two strikes the most. gary ------------------------------ From: "al sardinas" Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 09:31:55 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Full Contact Sparring - Drill Change Big Sean Madigan wrote the following: "Here is a drill that I use: Take a step forward to find how my opponent reacts. Then crash the line covering for the attack, and counter." I recommend changing the drill because what if your opponent has no reaction to your step forward or has a fake reaction to your step forward? In addition, unless you can mind read at a split second, how do you know where your opponent will strike. Do you automatically assume it will be a head shot? If your opponent is any good he will take advantage of your wasted movement.
