I thought I might like to see how others feel about it. Where he is the only instructor of fma is of let's say questionable linage. A very nice, and sincere person and a heck of a nice guy, but a "Seminar trained and start your own organization" guy. His question was isn't it better to train in something with real live people than to do nothing except solo training. I have mho on this but would like some feedback. Thanks and respects to all. Also let me wish all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukah, a Sensational Solstice and in general a great Holiday Season however you celebrate it, Bear ------------------------------ From: Ray Langley Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2000 08:29:01 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Combat Cane Defense Hello to Ray Terry and all who make this list a great success. As an introduction, I am taking private tutoring in Kuntaw-Kali. My primary interest in these arts is learning how I can adapt these techniques directly to the common crooked-top walking Cane and legal-to-carry knives. I am the moderator of the PerfectWeapon mailing list (www.egroups.com). In my opinion the Cane is the ideal weapon because it is legal to take with you on airlines, in casinos, courtrooms, sporting events, etc. In the past few months I have reviewed a dozen instructional video tapes on using the cane for self-defense. These tapes are filled with fancy moves such as disarms, joint locks, takedowns, etc. This is very entertaining to watch on the T.V., but I know that I will not be able to "pull it off" in a real situation. My goal is to "find" a simple but highly effective system, using the Cane. So far, the closest thing I have seen is contained in the Dog Brothers series on Real Contact Stickfighting! Tape 1 on Power is amazing. So, if you folks will indulge me, I'd like to ask a few questions of some of the stick fighters on this list such as Marc Denny, Dave F., Chad, etc. 1. Have any of you actually used the cane in your full contact matches? 2. Would you consider the cane to be more of a two-handed weapon? 3. Marc, do the Dog Brothers have any plans to release a video specifically for using the cane to fight? 4. Any tips for this over the hill, out of shape beginner? 5. Would you consider the crook/horn to be a liability or an advantage in a real street situation? Thanks to all for your consideration. Happy Holidays to all.
