However in my travels around the country I have found that this attitude seems to be in the minority. I cannot begin to count the number of individuals I've run into whose training has consisted of 8 or 10 seminars and now they claim to teach the FMAs. This type of thinking seems particuarly prevalent among instructors of other systems who believe that because they know a few siniwalis (or as I was told one day single wallys and double wallys) and they know the box pattern they are qualified to teach the FMAs. People ask me if I know the box pattern or so and so's variation 62a of the box pattern. When I reply in the negative they usually get a shocked look on their face that I don't know these prearranged pattern drills. I try to explain to them that one of the principles of flow sparring is to develop the ability to flow from movement to movement. That by focusing exclusively on patterned type drills they are losing the ability to flow. But it's hard for alot of them to comprehend because their entire exposure to the FMAs has been through seminars. By their very nature alot of seminar training, as conducted by certain individuals, consist entirely of prearranged drills. Therefore alot of the seminar participants don't realize that the prearranged drills are a supplement, not the core, of training in the FMAs. Training in the old ways does get a little boring to alot of people. Not too many prearranged drills simply learn a few counters then try to apply them while someone is trying to take your head off. At Mike Inay's funeral someone asked a few of us what the difference was between training in the old days and training as it's conducted by alot of people today. My reply was that in the old days Mike employed alot of intensity in his attacks and we did the same while training with one another. Actually my reply was a little cruder than the above reply but since this is a public forum I cleaned up the answer a little bit. It is this type of intensity that must comprise the majority of the individual's training if they are to learn how to deal with the andrenal dump that occurs in a real fight. Unfortunately the individual that has been trained solely in the seminar setting usually lacks this intensity. Most of these individuals know alot of drills and variations to the drills but usually collapse under pressure. I have however run into a small minority of individuals that were able to handle the pressure even as beginners in the FMAs. These guys were usually other special operations soldiers or individuals that in their core martial arts training were exposed to a good deal of pressure in their own training. Sorry about the long winded reply but this is my thoughts on the vast majority of individuals that I have met who are solely seminar trained. About solo training I agree that it is always good to have a live training partner. However at times that is not possible and I usually do the vast majority of my solo training on the decuerdas staff. Either the single staff or some variation that Mike came up with or my own variations.
