That accounts for 25%-30% of the muscle size. I would argue that the fluid is extra weight which does not do anything. 20% to 30% of S.H. is also made up of mitochondria and cell capillaries. That is about 60% of cell volume of a bodybuilder's muscle is not involved in strength. (Pavel Tsatsouline-"power to the people" a good book on basic strength training) In my opinion, increasing a muscle size by adding fluid and blood vessels does not increase raw strength or ability. Besides, cell fluid and capillaries have a tendency to disappear when you stop training for a few days. Strength built from 1-5 reps will stay longer. ------------------------------ From: Kilap@aol.com Date: Thu, 4 Jan 2001 23:10:09 EST Subject: eskrima: Re:Seattle IMA Brian writes: << Filipino or Indonesian martial arts in the Seattle area. The feeling is mutual for what Guro/Sifu Reginald Buford offers in the areas of sparing and Doce Pares. His moves are powerful, fluid and his teaching style is clear & effective. He's also dame generous. Since I started teaching again I have been privileged to have cross trained and share with a number of digest members. Sifu Buford has twice graced our school with impromptu seminars. Guro Eddie Lastra, Jeff Finder, Markus Weizerstein (sp?) and others have also done the same. I'm also thankful for the other organizations and instructors that I've been allowed to visit and cross train with. You know who you are: salamat! Jim is correct in that there are a ton of Bay Area Serrada instructors. I know of ten in the San Francisco Daly City Area alone. I also happen to be one of them. I teach a class Wednesday nights in San Francisco and Saturday mornings in Daly City. The interested party can call me at (415) 601-2735. I can also provide contact info for the other instructors if they are interested in private lessons. Serrada happens to be a system that produces amazing results through private training. IMO what allows a serrada practitioner to develop is having a skilled and committed instructor and a good community to train in. I've compared notes with many generations of Serrada practitioners and I've seen a multitude of insights and variations to the basic training methodology. A serious student of Serrada who visits the Bay Area would be smart to visit the following organizations: The Inayan Training Organization in San Jose (though there are instructors through out the Bay Area), the International Eskrima Serrada Association in San Francisco, and the Angel's Disciples Association in Stockton, CA. All three of those groups have different takes on the art and it's progression. What they have in common is instructors I respect and communities where training is taken seriously. There are other groups and instructors worth visiting but they tend to be secretive and you need introductions. For the record my organization's Serrada lineage comes from the Angel's Disciples Association. I am continuing my training with Master Darren Tibon and Datu Frank Lillie. Those are the Serrada performance standards I hold my students to. I've been teaching Serrada since 92. Lastly my opinion is my opinion; not the truth.
