E." Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 15:40:40 Subject: eskrima: New Book: Filipino Fighting Arts Greetings to all Digest Members: Last Aug. I had mentioned the forthcoming release of Mark Wiley's book which is a continuation of his work from "Filipino Martial Culture". I've been blessed to receive an early release of his latest efforts entitled, "Filipino Fighting Arts Theory & Practice". The book reveals more insight & comparative information into 27 Filipino Systems. The reader will also find that the author has researched & included many new instructors & systems that were not mentioned in the previously titled book. Good news! Amazon.com does have this recent title available when last I checked. This book, as is true of Mark Wiley's other titles, is well deserving of being included on the shelf of any well-stocked FMA library. It offers all FMA'ists a brief overview of the diversity, complexity, beauty & commonality of the arts that we have so devoted ourselves to. To those of us who don't have an unlimited travelling & training expense account nor that of an understanding family, I thank once again Master Wiley for his enduring efforts & research. I also thank him for taking us, the reader, along on his journey of his pursuit of knowledge & understanding. While you won't believe it at first the facts will blow you away. At 32 years old in two months using this once a week program I am seeing gains in strength that I have never seen in my whole life. Read the book argue with yourself that everything you've ever learned about training is right then try it exactly as they say you should. I have been on the program for only two months, but so far it is working for me. Tsatsouline recommends two working sets of 5 reps using large compound exercises like dead lifts and bench with heavy weights. I warm-up with a full range of motion with a light weight and go to partials for the heavy sets. Good recovery so far and no feeling of overtraining. My buddy, Jujitsu instructor Steve Extence, has an article on weight training in this past fall's Pekiti-Tirsia International newsletter. In the article is a photo of him doing 950 lbs partial squats for reps. He is the one who loaned me Tsatsouline's book and he swears by it. The short heavy routine in Tsatsouline's book fits my schedule right now, but if I had more time (especially if I was in my 20's), I would cycle through 6 weeks each of endurance, size, and strength programs. Right now I am thinking more of a maintenance routine with the time I have. I have a question for the medical people on ED. In most of the weight training programs I've seen, as you go up in weight you go down in reps and sets. Is the total weight lifted before overtraining occurs the same? I.E. is the stress on the body's recovery system equal no matter how you divide a weight? Does lifting a total weight of "X" consume "X" number of calories and produce "X" amount of waste products no matter the set and rep breakdown? Does it matter to your liver or kidneys whether you lift 5000 lbs by lifting it in 5 sets of 10 reps with 100 lbs or 2 sets of 5 reps with 500 lbs or 1 set of 100 reps with 50 lbs in the same amount of time? Of course your muscles will develop differently with different set/rep programs, but what is the deciding factor in recovery ability? The rep/set/weight ratios used in different programs would suggest that the answer is the total work done divided by the time it took to do that work, but that still seems too simple an answer to me.
