The basic idea is that a brief amount of MAXIMUM effort (one set of 6-10 reps, IIRC) followed by a relatively long recovery period, is recommended. As strength is increased (200% of starting weight or so), you DECREASE the amount of days you do that exercise from 3 to 2 per week. At still higher levels, you would decrease to only once per week. The main thing is to train each exercise to muscle FAILURE, and that this should be reached within one minute and within 10 reps for each exercise. My reasoning is, I hate lifting and it allows one to get in & out inside of 30 minutes. jester ------------------------------ From: Barry Hitchcock Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 22:15:30 -0500 Subject: eskrima: strength training I do not wish to get into a running discussion/argument on weight training. In reading and researching strength training for over 30 years with face to face and phone interviews with college and pro football strength coaches and scientists and trainers the following has shown itself to be the best result producing and most scientific systems available. www.mikementzer.com www.superslow.com www.cyberpump.com Good training, Dr. Barry Hitchcock ------------------------------ From: kalkiusa@netscape.net (Mikal Keenan) Date: Sat, 06 Jan 2001 22:18:23 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Tuhon McGrath's Recovery Question I'm going to comment on one aspect of recovery. An essential concern in recovery from exertion is free radical damage. Free oxygen radicals put holes in the membranes of muscle cells. Part of the damage can be prevented by supplementing the natural antioxidant mechanisms of the body. Free radicals aren't all bad ... a lot are used in some very critical physiological "stuff" so we have to be careful to not overdo antioxidant supplementation. OTOH, antioxidant supplementation can reduce recovery time by decreasing the amount of damage done by oxygen radicals. There are other benefits which vary btwn individuals, but may have some generalizinf benefit for all. For example, Vitamin C can improve the quality of your training (respiratory system) and decrease recovery time as well. I take a gram of C before every training session and have noticed improved recovery since the first trial. If any of you have asthma, a gram ov Vitamin C may also prevent exertion-onset asthma attacks. How about that? If plain Vit C gives you problems at that dose, try buffered C, like Ester C. Be well, Mik BTW, my first grandchild, grandson, Kofi Eric, was born last week to my son Keota Kofi and his wife Lynn.
