The recruiters and hiring managers seem to respect commitment in extracurricular pursuits, so list the number of years and your instrutor status. If you get too specific, you'll have to answer a lot of questions. Once, I listed too much and was caught in that situation when applying for a software position at a major computer game manufacturer. Silicon Valley has a socially liberal culture, especially among corporate women. If you present yourself as a deadly, tough guy, you'll probably leave the impression that you are trouble. Whatever you do, don't mention weapons. ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2001 23:34:11 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: Resume: Special Education: Full Contact Stickfighting >>Do you feel mainstream >>corporate America knows about the benefits of martial arts training in >>self-discipline, leadership, etc., or does it look at us as a bunch of >>survival militia types? >>Use it or loose it on the resume? To give you a little background on me: Professionaly I was a corporate Headhunter, I specialized in Information Services and Software Development recuitment. I did this for some time and was quite successful at it. Most hiring managers do not look at your interests on a personal level, they look at your projects and previous job experience. That is if they are looking at you for temporary or contract work. Now if the manager is looking for a permanent employee it will be different. Not only will they be interested in your proffesional skills and background, they will look to see who you are personaly. They need to determine if you will be a good fit in the corporate culture. With this in mind some hiring managers and Human Resources people will look at your personal interests on your curriculum vitae. My experience was that most managers see the benefit of the discipline garnered from any Martial Arts or "sports" in general. They show that you have good teamwork skills or good work ethic in general. However all this depends on the hiring manager's personal view of Martial Arts. Just my experience in the working world. IMHO: it will help more than it will hinder you. all the best from berlin achim (now pangunahin) from a.e.k. germany ------------------------------ From: Tom Valesky Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 07:23:06 -0500 (EST) Subject: eskrima: re: resume listing? yes or no I'm not in HR, but I do a lot of tech interviewing, and I review a lot of resumes. When I see a "Hobbies" section on a resume, my thought is that the candidate has run out of things to say and is trying to fill the page. Resumes should be short and highly focused; hobbies have no place on a resume. Of course, if you're applying for a position as an eskrima instructor... I've been working in Eden Prairie, MN, on and off since August and wouldn't mind possibly meeting up to train. For some odd reason I haven't been able to get to the Kali Group since I've been here due to my work schedule. If this sounds like a possibility, pls feel free to email me personally. arctrx@yahoo.com Raphael Chiu Filipino Kali-Eskrima Academy of Chicago Student of Guro Nathan Defensor __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I haven't found it to be an issue on my resume. If it's not mentioned, they either didn't see it or didn't care to ask about it. If they do decide to ask about it, the two most common questions I get are: 1) How does your art compare against others? I may or may not know what it is. I also study an art too but I want to know the difference b/w your art and my art. - -AND ALWAYS- 2) Do you have a black belt? or some other obnoxious question about rank. I think they ask this one b/c it somehow is suppose to show discipline and dedication. Since you and I are sort of the same line (MG Nate Defensor, yeah I'd like to meet you in person someday), I would definitely NOT mention anything concerning stances on the reality of combat, combat readiness, weaponry, knives, etc, or anything that can make you appear hostile or violent. Yeah, keep it simple and water it down. Hope this helps.
