All of us who have had the pleasure of training with Remy Presas are praying for his speedy recovery. It's nice to know there is strong leadership in the art while he is sick. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I read some time ago (middle of last year) of a series of books being released (mostly MV Wiley) one of which was entitled "Filipino Martial Arts: Serrado Escrima" by Dan Inosanto. Does anyone have info about this book- it isn't the FMA book now out of print. My understanding was it was a new book, or at least one that has eventually been published. In 1980 Dan Inosanto released a book entitled The Filipino Martial Arts. In 1994 Mark Wiley released a book entitled Filipino Martial Arts: Cabales Serrada Escrima. They are unrelated, the books as well as Wiley and Guro I. :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com ------------------------------ From: "mcferreng001" Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 16:49:14 -1000 Subject: eskrima: >>Use it or loose it on the resume?<< >>Use it or loose it on the resume?<< This is a little different case, But I just moved last month into a new condo, I met the owner and we talked for few. when I walked him to his car I saw he had a Kempo sticker on the window. I ask about it and found out he is a die hard MA person and has been doing it for 10 years, we got to talking about training, styles, stick work and all kinds of other things. The change can the next time we met, he was Far more outgoing to me and seemed happy to have me as a tenant. The common interest of MA helped turn a business relationship into a much more friendly working relationship. So for me I would use it on your resume, you never know what the other persons interests are, It might be the 1 thing that makes you stand out above the others, I don't think that It would ever hurt you chance at a job, Just my thoughts Greg ------------------------------ From: Todd Ellner Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 19:16:39 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Re: Twin Cities Kali steveb writes: > I attend Rick Faye's school here in Minneapolis, and it's a very good > school, the best in the state at least. Kali, Silat, JKD. Does Greg Nelson still have a school? He was Rick's senior student when my wife was there. Heard he'd started teaching in St. Paul. Greg would be another one well worth checking out. It may emphasize fuctionality of strength building for combat, than just building muscle mass. Also, for those of us that don't always have the time or money for weight, it seems like a reasonable alternative. The debate has been rekindled by the publication of a follow-up volume on the art and his use of Sultan Uddin's name and photographs printed without MG Uddin's consent. >> Politics aside, it seems to me Mr. Wiley went out of his way to recognize and include as many Serrada Guros as possible in his latest Serrada book. Like it or not, the man is doing the research and putting it out there for all of us to benefit . With the new book, 1/3 of the material is written by others than Mr. Wiley and he is not pictured in any of the technique sequences. With the likes of Vincent Cabales, Gariel Asuncion, Anthony Davis, Frank Rillamas, Ron Saturno, Darren Tibon, Jerry Preciado, etc., etc., all contributing, he can't be too far off...can he? I enjoyed Secrets of CSE more than FMA CSE but enjoyed Filipino Fighting Arts less than Filipino Martial Culture. FFA is good for what it is, it gives one a taste of many arts but unfortunately leaves you hungering for more. In that way it is a typical Unique Publications book. Regards. At that time I did not feel that I was in the position to give copies of PG Edgar's lifework to someone I did not know. He offered to send me some footage of himself and other material. After recieving the material I was very pleased that my initial impression and reservations proved to be correct. Was that PC enough for everyone? :) Michael A.
