The VP of sales tells my candidate " I attained an officers rank in the armed forces, so I run a disciplined outfit here.. do you think you could flourish in a demanding environment?" My candidate replied: " Well, I hold a Black Belt in Tang Soo Do, So I know all about discipline, pushing myself, and striving for excellence.. I also teach MA, so I have to be a mentor, a motivator, and a good communicator"... His MA background wasn't on his resume, but he picked a great time to talk about it. Maybe this approach would work for you. Good luck, Tom ------------------------------ From: RBalicki@aol.com Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 11:53:28 EST Subject: eskrima: Tom Carnes Tom Carnes also approached me by phone looking for footage of my wife, Guro Dan Inosanto or myself. He tried to tell me that he was a historian appointed by Paula Inosanto for all of Guro Dan's film footage. Somehow he had gotten phone numbers students and friends of mine across the country and was very persistent about them sending him videos. It is no easy task to write a book. For the benefit of those people just coming into the arts, we who have been around, should seek to watch our words more closely. We should seek unity instead of division, harmony instead of dissension. Let all this be a lesson to all of in how we should view one another. I also wonder if Mr. Wiley has finally learned this lesson.?. The extent of it has been "Black Belt in Karate" and leave it at that. You certainly do not want to list your sword expertise and knife prowless if you are applying for a job at the postal service. We want even mention the "expert marksman" portion you could put on your resume. At most, I would say put your generic rank in martial arts, like black belt. I would not put 10th degree, 3rd degree etc. If asked keep your responses to the standard disclipine stuff. example: "Yes, martial arts helped me in life. I set goals and obtained them. It taught me to try and keep trying until I succeed in my goals. Just like I tackled my martial arts training, I have done the same >>> in school .... in my field, etc. " If they don't notice it fine, they were not interested. If they do notice it, you have something the other applicants do not have. I even put college fraternity stuff on some resumes. (If you know your guy has been in a college fraternity, even if it was not the same as yours.) On the other hand, if he was a GDI you would not want to include it. Again though, I would limited it to generic explanations. Black Belt in Kung fu... Black belt in Filipino Martial Arts.... Instructor rating in Philipino martial arts... etc. But do not list anything like: "Supreme Datu Mahau Guro of the Loyal order of the Royal Water Buffallo of Kuntaw-kali-Escrimia- Fillipino Martial Arts" Listing something like this will only get you designated a nut case and get your resume put in file #13. :-) Gary H. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 17:08:31 PST Subject: Re: eskrima: Re: Martial Art Resume's > "Supreme Datu Mahau Guro of the Loyal order of the Royal Water Buffallo of > Kuntaw-kali-Escrimia- Fillipino Martial Arts" Listing something like this > will only get you designated a nut case and get your resume put in file #13.
