I always wondered if these things, that Mike told me too, were known to the digest members, because there are so many irritations about the people holding the Master-certificate in Serrada. But you did an excellent job by putting the facts into a comprensive whole, so that the motivation and the feelings of all of the different parties are clear and unterstandable. I think your mail leaves hardly any question open. My respect for that. Any of you instructors out there (or your teachers for the students) that do background checks on a potential student prior to beginning instruction? Pros? Cons? with that experience. At my MA Club we allow applicants to attend 2 classes for no charge and use that time for a feel out period by myself and the other members. If the applicant is an adult I will talk to their friends and other family members about them, even talk to some of their workmates. I have contacted my local police dept. only once about an applicant with a worrisome background. If the applicant is a teenager I will again talk to family and friends. I will also contact his school or work and speak with the teachers or supervisors. This will give us a very good idea of what kind of person the applicant is and whether they are someone with the kind of disposition we are willing to train with. The applicant is aware of this taking place and the members of the club have a say as to whether the applicant becomes a member. The member then must stay a member in good standing in order to continue to train with us. This is done by hard work with a good teachable attitude. This removes a lot of potential trouble . It does keep our club small but with dedicated members. Due to the weapons based training we conduct, I feel I have an obligation to the club members, my community, and the instructors I have had the honor to train under to assure quality training to a quality member. I am sure we have missed out on some very good possible members but we have also been able to help some’ "not quite sure we should be working with the person", to turn into very good members of our community. We have had several not so good people want to train with us. I have had a number of persons come to us wanting to, "Learn how to Knife fight." This in it self is what many of us have continued in the FMA to learn and isn't bad. When put with the wrong person with an ego maniac personality there is a large potential for danger to the other members. IMHO we should respect him for that. I must correct myself in what is said in the above. I just got off the phone with GM Vincent Cabales. Mr. Wiley did NOT return to Stockton to complete his Serrada training. My error. Given our recent thread on MA experience on your resume, I thought I'd forward the following from rec.m-a. It comes from someone that has authored many, ummm, memorable posts on rec.m-a. Ray - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Escrimadors cannot be employed as they are too developed in intelligence, observation, and feeling. They think that the guy hiring them has got to be kidding as he does not even know the first basic block against strike number 1. There is no future for Escrima or Pentjak Silat in USA. USA is a business community-controlled country which will not allow any cultural arts movement to come up. Escrima and Silat are arts of spiritual essence and cannot but affect every subject. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 18:47:45 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #23 *************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
