If some of you remember, last year I circulated a Filipino Martial Arts Newsletter, which I titled "Mandirirgma News". I intended for it to be a Northern California/Bay Area newsletter, but after announcing it i received more requests nationwide (actually, worldwide!) I've decided to write about Filipino martial arts anywhere. I am working on my next issue which should be finished and ready to distribute by February. I lost my mailing list when Hotmail closed my account, so if anyone is still interested in receiving the newsletter please send me your address and I'll make sure you get a copy. I plan to mail out the first two issues free; subscriptions are $15.00 per year. If you are interested in a school subscription (I mail you a master copy, then you can print or customize the newsletter for your own area--and more) please email me privately. BTW, I donate 100% of the money I receive after costs. Also, as a writer, I feel a little compassion for Mark Wiley. I've read his books, and maybe I'm missing the boat here, but I don't recall him writing anything offensive other than puffing up his credentials, but doesn't all "experts" do that? For example, what the hell is a BLADEMASTER? Do 7th, 8th, 10th degree Black Belts test for their rank? Who decides if someone has an "effective" life-or-death/streetfighting/lethal combat system? You see? Wiley wants to sell books, he's a writer! If you don't like what he writes, either don't read his material or blame the men he interviews! Now, even my instructor picks at his apparent skill in still photos, but he knows the man is simply researching an area we only think we know about, but how many of us have devoted any money or time to go to the Philippines and find out if everything our instructors tell us is true, or just to learn more? I think we should thank the man for trying his best for presenting the arts we love so much in a positive light. Many folks bend the history (or make it up) to glamorize what I am many other Filipinos see as a simple and practical culture, but I enjoy seeing that our arts are not surrounded in mysticism and unbelievable stories. Mark Wiley is living the life I am willing to bet most FMArtists dream about: travelling the countryside, studying from as many masters that would talk to me, seeing firsthand what others only talk about in the third person. Then he is sharing the information he's "discovered" with the rest of the community. All for the price of $24.95. Hell, now I don't even have to buy a plan ticket. I have recently moved and have a lot less space, temporarily, for my weight equipment. I am limited to my dumbbells, one Olympic bar and a multipurpose bench, that I have to move around a lot. I have been intrigued by the infomercials for the "TotalGym." It seems a great idea for limited space, plus has the advantages of providing stretching. Has anyone ever used one of these? If so I would like a review. I have never found anything that can surpass free weights, but I am always open to new technology also. Thanks all. But I am not sure I follow this thinking. IMHO martial arts improves people. I have watched over the years while several teenagers with bad raps and troubled backgrounds, studied the art. AND teh art changed them, for the better. It taught them many lessons and increased their self worth to the point that they (all 5) are attending college this year. So i often fear that background checks may limit access to the MA for those that need it the most. After they train with you, and you get to know them a little better, you can more accurately begin to acess their "heart", but I say let them in the door. I see our kwoon as a refuge, and I would not turn away someone based on their experiences with the law or shcool. everyone walks into my door with a clean slate and equal oppertunity to progress. I feel I am not qualified to judge anyone, I know what I did in my life, and I hope you would not judge me. Give them a chance and know them before you judge them, or better yet, JUDGE NOT LEST THOU BE JUDGED. Inay. The decision to do so was not made lightly and is done so with a heavy heart. With the passing of Mangisursuro Mike G. Inay our world changed instantly and dramatically. Though discussion with the Grand Master had been made on several occasions as to his wishes in the event of his untimely passing, nothing could have prepared us as a group or individually in losing our father in the art and life. Mangisursuro expressed that he wished for his son Jason Inay to head the Inayan System of Eskrima in which he has. Jason Inay is a talented Martial Artist and we know he will continue to spread the art as he interpets it. We support him in that role and wish him success. Unfortunately, we feel our goals, direction and vision for the future of the art differs from his and we must continue on the path Mangisursuro pointed out for us. It is our intent to carry on with the wishes of Mangisursuro Mike Inay as we perceive them to be. In keeping with Mangisursuro's most profound hope, we will teach his art as we have learned it to those that seek it. We as a group, The Inayan Brotherhood of Eskrima, will continue to spread the art he taught each of us and propagate his teachings here and around the world.
