A recent story from the local newspaper (The Daily Breeze which covers the South Bay of Los Angeles) reported that a young woman was raped in Hermosa Beach while walking home on New Year's eve at 3:00AM from a popular nightspot on Pier Ave by a man who had followed her from the bar. Hermosa Beach generally is a very safe area and such crimes are quite rare. She reported the matter to police with her husband at her elbow and with her description police experts came up with a drawing. She described the man as having a couple of unusual distinguishing marks-- if I remember correctly one was a scar on the neck (subsequently discovered to be from a gunshot wound). After brooding for a couple of days, and frustrated by the level of police (in)activity on the case, the husband staked out the bar to see if the man who had raped his wife would return. A man with those very unusual identifying marks and matching the description of the man his wife had described did. The husband followed him into the bathroom and shot him in the ass as the man was peeing in the garbage can. The husband has been charged with something like "assault with a deadly weapon" (not attempted murder because he shot him in the ass). The wife has identified the man her husband shot as her rapist and it turns out that having been convicted and done time for rape, the man is a registered sex offender. Comments? What follows is information that anyone who teaches self deffense to females should know about. Great preventative information. I have also include a realization from my own teaching. The attached post has very good info and also speaks to something I learned: "great things for me might be really messed up for someone else". Case in point I used to tell all my students that the best defense is to be nice and treat people right. I never want to have to use my knowledge and skill for real. I have found other venues for my growth. Hence my new realm of play for 2001: full contact stifighting. Thought folks should know! My Wednesday night class in San Francisco has a number of female students. It's also located in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District near 16th and Valencia. Walk a block in any direction and... well you're not in Kansas anymore. Welcome to the land of tuff and mean humbres. One of my female students lives in what has become a prostitution drive by and pick up area. When she heard my blanket statement about being nice and treating people right, she was pretty Pissed Off. Actually the mood of all my female students at the time turned sour. A heated and enlightening conversation followed. It all ended up being sorted out with new ground gained. What I learned was that for her: an attractive, stricking really, female in her early twentys, the right action sometimes looks like yelling, "F#ck Off ya dumb john! I'm not a hooker". She doesn't drive like many city dwellers so even when she dresses up to go out she still has to walk through that neiborhood to catch a cab or the bus. Living a life you love can take work. Sure she could follow all the dressing tips bellow maybe even take it to an extream and make herself un-attractive, but at what price. Not to get people stuck on looks- the point is I know life is better when people are true to themselves. There is a line between geting what you, preventing what you don't want, and walking with what is so. Enjoy and learn, Elrik Jundis Director/Lead Instructor School of Pilipino Martial Arts ------------------------------ From: EGJundis@aol.com Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 18:32:12 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Your opinion please...Street Smarts What follows is my response to a students request for my opinion on two altercations that have recently happened. I talked to her in class last night to see if she was OK and was surprised to see that she thought that I might have wanted her to finish her opponents off ala the bad guys in the Karate Kid flicks. Once again more proof that we all life in our own worlds of ideas and the importance of checking in. She had said that a few of her friends teased her that since she was taking martial arts she should have kicked the asses of her asailants. Not my desire at all. Her letter follows. Dear T-$. Simply put, I teach to bring out the best in people. It is an expansive statement and meant to be inclusive of all of your life. I am more interested in and intentful that our student base learn how to think and learn than simply reproduce a mindless technique (not to say techniques are inhearently mindless, it is the manner in which they are practiced.) . I am also more concerned about the types of interactions that happen between students and instructors in our classrooms. Since what we teach is martial arts, there is an intent that you develop the ability to walk confidently down the street at night. You should be aware of your limitations and also know what to do prevent altercations and to intervene if you are attacked. You have done so. It is also my intent that if you are attacked you should be able to walk away unharmed or without permenant damage. You have done this as well. In both instances you were up to something; someone attacked you; you intervened; and you were able to return to your task. I could not ask for more. The question is are you satisfied with your results. You asked what I would have done. In your situation I would have done the same. I lived in a heroin den at one time in my life and believe me you don't want to touch drugged out folks if you can. They can have all kinds of nasty sharp things on their person. Depending on the situation I mave have kicked the person to get them off of me. When I am on the street I am always keeping my field of vision as spread as possible. This is the soft focus I have talked about in the past where you are aware of everything in your field of vision. I am also relying on all of my senses to give me the widest picture of my environment: this usualy is limited to touch and hearing. As I walk through places like the Mission District I am also keeping aware of my environement: ie places to run to or hide, natural weapons, places where I can be ambushed, best liteing, types of people ahead. As a child my dad would have me walk the streets of San Francisco with him. A former gang youth himself, he taught me how to be street smart. The game is prevention. Sooooo I have been thinking alot about womens self-defense and was planning on writing a e-mail to the group with my thoughts on the subject, and any insights I can share that can be passed along to other females (have living in the Ghetto most my life).... But first of all I would like to thank you for teaching the open hand pass (I dont know the name) but its the one where you pass someones intended blow...I've used it once at the Bar while I was working and the second time was yesterday... So I was waiting for the bus at 16th and Valencia about 3:00pm..I was planning on going to Ross to buy a bathing suit for my vacation and well The neighbor hood crackhead/homeless lady named Shirley snapped and went for my face... Minding my own bussiness waiting for the bus I looked to my right and when I was turning to look to my left her hands were allready at my face..... I passed her hands after she had allready made contact and with her own forced was moving her away from me, which happened to be in the street... I then was yelling at her to get the F' out of here..to just go... By this time she was about 5 feet away from me..threating to kill me..Now I didn't go after her or anything..Knowing she was all cracked out...and she was slowing leaving.. The Bus then showed up and I continued to go to Ross to buy my bathing suit... I thought if I went home, and let her mess up my day she would have truly beat me.. When I got home I cleaned my face since she had left welts with her nails..Thank God she didn't break the skin.....I guess I wanted to know what you would have done in this situation...I guess I wanted to be reassured that I did the right thing....I had a dream last night that I was being forced in a van by 3 guys on the street..weird huh..I think awile back I would have lossed it on her...I think thats my brain being confused... This was posted on the Pekiti-Tirsia digest recently. Could any ED members curently in the Philippines add further details? Christian sect members hacked to death in southern Philippines December 15, 2000 Web posted at: 11:00 PM HKT (1500 GMT) MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- At least 11 people were hacked to death as Christian sects waged a machete battle at a remote shrine in the Philippines, army officials said Friday. About 100 members of the Christian Pulahan group, armed with machetes and hand grenades, surrounded 200 members of the rival Benevolent Missionary Association at sunset Wednesday at the shrine of the association's leader on Dinagat Island, some 450 miles southeast of Manila. Authorities said Friday they were still trying to determine what provoked the attack. Pulahan members dressed in red besieged the shrine building until Thursday morning, when the captives -- wearing amulets they say make them invincible -- rebelled with machetes, said Army Col. Leo Ferer. Many other people were wounded but are in hiding, police said. They are searching for Pulahan leader Eddie Quinanola for questioning. Police said all 11 dead were Pulahan members, but the army said only seven were Pulahans. At least one senior member of the Benevolent Missionary Association was hacked several times with machetes but survived, Ferer said. Authorities sent 50 extra police officers and a small army unit to the area to prevent new violence. Rivalry between small Christian groups has killed dozens of people this year, mostly in the southern Philippines. At least 20 people died in August as a group clashed with police who tried to arrest one of its members. Worshippers in remote areas of the Philippines, a mostly Roman Catholic nation, often combine traditional and Christian beliefs. The armed groups often act as vigilantes, helping authorities fight Muslim and communist insurgents. Copyright 2000 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
