From Marc Animal MacYoung << Subject: the_dojang: RE: Safety tips.. >> Several people also sent that piece of work to me too. Unlike my wife I didn't exactly hit the roof over the nonsense, but I will admit to doing a few laps around the walls before I settled down. The problem I found with it is twofold, and they are described in two sayings I have about teaching self-defense. 1) Do you know the actual problem or are you just guessing? 2) Fantasy answers to fantasy problems Number one, whoever wrote it fell into the classical trap of "there are three kinds of people in this world: those that think, those that don't think and those who think they think" I don't know where that person got the information, but obviously he/she didn't use the journalist creed of "if your mother tells you she loves you, check it out." It sounded good to "what they thought" the problem is. The biggest problem isn't rape, but what people think how rape occurs. Without having direct experience or doing extensive research to discover all the variations and anomolies that can occur this person apparently accepted someone's "sage and wise knowledge" about a subject as gospel. One trip to the Bureau of Justice statstics webpage debunks a whole lot of that information. And while I consider rape crisis centers to be somewhat unreliable in their information, (due more to tweaking numbers and agenda rather than intent), any local center can blow enough holes in the misinformation presented to make it look like Bonnie and Clyde's car. Of the millions of rapes that occur every year, that information might describe one - -- which makes it a little too specialized for usefulness. Basically somebody - maybe with training, but without experience - heard something and came up with a list of information that sounded good to what they think the problem is and passed on as "gospel" to someone who didn't have a clue. Gosh golly gee, anybody but me wanna find that guy and slap the shit out of him for passing on such dangerous information? Sorry kiddies where I am from before you present yourself as an "expert" you do your homework...operative word being "work" But whoever did it, is obviously more impressed with the glory of being an expert than the fact that his prideful laziness is going to get someone killed. Which brings us to the next element. As whoever, came up with this list refused to come out of his/her comfort zone and do real research...the people who are passing it on, while they are doing it in good faith, are themselves inexperienced. They DON'T know the realities of the problem...but this information conforms to their fantasies of what the problem is. Picking an arguable number between BJS and Rape Crisis numbers, let's say that 85% of all rapes are committed by someone the woman knows. Stranger rapes do occur, but by anybody's numbers, they are a significant minority. Of them, you have a wide spectrum of possibilities, including the assault occuring in the women's own homes, walkways, laundry rooms, alleys, train platforms etc etc. Unfortunately, Jane Q Public beleives that rapists only attack strange women and in dark deserted parking lots...exactly as this post suggests. And gosh golly geepers.. here is what to do when that happens!!! So now they ready and know what to do about any rapist who tries that with them. Unfortunately they are now totally wide open to being blindsided from the other 99% of ways that they can be attacked. But since this is an uncomfortable subject...and since it would NEVER happen to them anyway...that half baked information is all they need. I highly recommend that if someone sends it to you or someone you know, either you or that person, write back to the sender and tell them that while they had the best intentions, it is an internet hoax. And a dangerous one at that. They need to contact people that they sent it to and tell them that. There is serious legitimate information about the problem out there on the internet. If someone is concerned, go there instead, not that BS. There are no simplistic answers to the problem and if someone tries to follow the advice in that emial, they will actually end up getting hurt. Could have been unacceptable if the guy simply bore a resemblance to the attacker. I was attacked in my own flat some years ago by two women (heavy set, pipe smoking, probably play rugby - you get the drift) due to their inability to negotiate the locale. If they had turn right instead of left they would have ended up at the right guys flat - and by all accounts the little scrote would have got what he deserved, one of his hobbies being to give his girlfriends a good kicking on a regular basis. However, the description the two women had "short, thin, long brown hair", covered both him and me and after a quantity of alcohol it was close enough for them to pull knives and go to sort him out. Upshot was I spent 6 hours in the police station (first time as it happens) only to be told that as there was no evidence to back up either sides story we were all to be allowed home. I saw the women later in the street and despite the fact they'd got the wrong guy, they seemed quite pleased to have caused a man some problems!! All in all, I think these people suited each other perfectly!! In order to get on the inmate's visiting list, the inmate must file an application with his prison unit counselor. Then it is checked out and approved or disapproved. It is not that easy to get on the list. Also, I would like to know when pepper spray is effective. You can email me privately and tell me there or post here. I would appreciate the knowledge.
