It doesn't matter one single iota when or where sexual assaults are more common. When someone is assaulted, they are assaulted. People have to realize that it is the scumbags alone who will pick the person, time, place and method of their attacks. To suggest that if someone avoids being out late, cuts their hair short, avoids strangers, carries pepper spray or any other behavioral modification they will avoid assault misses the point. Eliminating these predators is the only thing that will "ensure" safety. Until then consider that there is a danger of being attacked anywhere, anytime by anybody. I have a female family member who was attacked in the front yard of our house at noon by a stranger while planting flowers. A police officer told her that SHE needed to more careful! Another relative was attacked in her bed by a male who had broken into her apartment through a sliding glass door. It should never be implied that it was victims "fault" no matter how innocent, naive or passive their behavior. To hell with all those perpetrate these crimes. There are many of us that have been doing martial arts of some sort or another for years some of us decades, yet when I attend a seminar and learn new material it still takes me a whole lot of "drive time" to make it a functional part of my repertoire. Most of the people I know are the same way. When you start teaching someone that has never thrown a punch in fun let alone anger, that has no motor skills for a base and that will not, in all likely hood, practice what they are exposed to, it becomes an exercise in futility. Lets face it if there was a way to become a competent streetfighter in a weekend there would be a heck of a lot more aware individuals out there. Even when a person trains regularly the difference between a training environment and reality is one heck of a jump. With my wife, who has no interest in fma, it took a long time to get her used to being aware of the environment, and simply indexing her weapon, and most of the other nurses she works with think she a paranoid nut. Comments like "I just couldn't live like that" or "you take your pistol to take out the trash, isn't that a bit farfetched?" I have taught a class at the hospital she works I was not invited back as I was "brutal, savage and barbaric,"( I guess a bic pen in an attackers eye is more "barbaric" than rape. On the other hand the self defense class (3 hr.) that is put on by the local police dept. is usually full. They teach passive resistance, and the cooperate do not piss your attacker off strategy. I guess my Question is "how can you teach someone to defend themselves, when they will not acknowledge the reality of combat?" repects, Bear ------------------------------ From: "steven drape" Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 15:19:28 +0800 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #34 Thought this little piece might lighten up the mood a little. ;-() Back in the days when every sailing ship had to have cannon forprotection: Cannon of the times required round iron cannonballs. The Captain orMaster wanted to store the cannonballs such that they could be of instant usewhen needed, yet not roll around the gun deck. The solution was to stack them up in a square-based pyramid next to the cannon. The top level of the stack had one ball, the next level down had four, the next had nine, the next had sixteen, andso on. Four levels would provide a stack of 30 cannonballs. The only real problem was how to keep the bottom level from sliding out from under the weight of the higher levels. To do this, they devised a small brassplate ("brass monkey") with one rounded indentation for each cannonball in the bottom layer.Brass was used because the cannonballs wouldn't rust to the "brass monkey,"but would rust and stick to an iron one. When temperature falls, brass contracts in size faster than iron. As it got cold on the gun decks, the indentations in the brass monkey would get smaller than the ironcannonballs they were holding. If the temperature got cold enough, the bottom layer would pop out of the now smaller indentations spilling the entirepyramid over the deck. Thus, it was, quite literally, "cold enough to freeze the balls off abrass monkey." A little military trivia that you always thought meant something else. I've been watching it live the past couple days, and as of about noon today (Saturday), Gloria Magcapagal-Arroyo was sworn in as the Philippines new president. The Philippines has now gone from an ignorant, uneducated pawn of the rich Marcos-related groups, to an intelligent, well-educated Ph.D. Thank God!, and good luck to her. She has her work cut out for her. Steve - -- _______________________________________________ FREE Internet Email for the Martial Arts!
