To hell with all those > perpetrate these crimes. Hi, you are right in many ways still I donīt agree with everything. Sure a weekend of selfdefense canīt teach martial arts skill. But already the feeling, that they can defend themselfe might give them another appearace, so that these women donīt look like a victim any more beacuse they look more self confident. On the other hand it doesnīt take too much skill to go for the eyse or kick to the groin or do just something to tight back. Here in Germany too, the statistic say, that about 85 - 90% of the attempted rapes stopped, when the woman starts to fight back in any way (yelling, shouting, kicking, scratching, whatever). So you donīt have to be an expert martial artist to start to defend yourself. My wife for example is not in Marial arts and was molested together with a girlfriend on a rather lonely way to a castle in Spanin. He started to grab and push them. Then she remembered a certain hairpull I shower her once. She applied that, brought the guy to the ground and they were able to get away. Not a matial arts skill (still something I teach for selfdefense) but it worked for her in that situation. Well, Sunny, wouldnīt that be the place for you to jump in? It is a 2-3 tape system by TSR. It is overpriced, with only the basics taught. He does put in some good tricks. It is basic streefighting stuff, stuff you should know after 6 months of training (at the most) and some thinking. He also gives away a knifefighting video with 3 moves that he claims that you can beat about anyone with. That one stunk. I think he said it was an ancient Irish fighting system, which begs the question, how could he learn it? He says he trained in JKD, I'm not sure with who. You are better off getting W E Fairbain's book "Get Tough." Its cheaper with better information. ------------------------------ From: kalkiusa@netscape.net (Mikal Keenan) Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 11:34:48 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Aim was low I think Re: The husband who retaliated for the rape of his wife ... if any rapist with half a brain could consider that someone might do the same deed to his mother/sister/daughter/whomever, maybe said rapist would not complain when someone pops a cap in him for raping someone else. His brainstem might have been a better resting place for that husband's aim ... but the price to the husband might be greater. I hope that the law let's him go with a fine or something ... you know, something like a fine for discharging the weapon in so-and-so county or something like that :-) There is no excuse for rape, and like murder or attempted murder, how can the perp complain when the victim or intended victim, or someone standing in for the victim, serves el perp something unexpected? The state may complain, but IMHO the state needs to be a lil bit mo flexible in favor of the otherwise law-abiding. We have a "divine" right to self defense. You guys have one of the best lists going. Thank you all for the contributions you have made in my training. I finally have something to share with the list members. A good friend and teacher of mine by the name of Robert Reish has put together a CD product that you or your students may be interested in. It includes a Filipino Historical overview, the ancient Filipino Law (Maragtas Code and the Code of Kalantiaw), the Katapunan (secret society), a Filipino glossary, Swish of the Kris, Jungle Patrol, with photographs, and more! The Filipino Historical part was written in the late 80's. Guro Dan Inosanto helped Bob quite a bit sharing many concepts in private sessions. Excerpts were taken from many sources; too many to mention. The Filipino dictionary also took quite a while to collect, from many sources. The late Punong Guro Edgar Sulite proof read the rather large glossary. Swish of the Kris occurred before and during the Spanish occupation of the Philippines up to and including the Spanish American War. And of course, the Filipino's didn't want to be occupied by anyone, especially the Moros in the south. Jungle Patrol occurred just after that war when the Americans took possession of the islands from Spain. Both books have been out of print for years and at one time outlawed for export from the Philippines. A lot of this information comes from Bob's personal FMA notebook, He is a very private person and never intended to release his research for publication, but after years of prodding, we have convinced him to do so. The CD uses Adobe's Acrobat Reader PDF file format so that documents can be read and printed across all computer platforms. He has included the Adobe Acrobat Reader on the CD version. The CD costs $20 US plus $5 shipping and handling, $25 total US $. The free Acrobat Reader can also be downloaded from Adobe's Web site: http://www.adobe.com Again, these are classic books; a must own! If any of your students are interested in obtaining a copy, please e-mail Bob Reish to order. Mention that James Bodnar has referred you. Bob Reish 316 S. But there are some people that >may just not be able to pull the trigger, or use a knife, even in their own >defense. What do you provide those people? Too much Self-Defense is geared toward what to do. Those individuals IMHO don't really understand self defense. In fact I bet those same people have lots of their own private war stories of glory. Looking for trouble to fix is one thing. Finding yourself in trouble is often your own fault or at least you contribute. What you teach "those people" (like all should be taught) is not how to use a gun but Self-Awareness and integretion in their environment. That's be one with nature for you dragon whips tail types. The name of the game is prevention. Doing things means your self defense has already failed. Basically, you have 2 choices. You brush your teeth or you get drilled by the dentist. In the end the problem is solved which one do you want to do? American MA is not self defense although it can be a componant of last resort. American MA is excercise. It's good for your heart. It teachs dexterity and makes your other sports better so you have more fun. There are but a handful of reasons it should ever be used in its historical form and most could not use it that way if they tried. There are few who are closer to there perhaps. The gracie challenge, DBMA gathering, and many others, all try to get a taste for the historical form but like I have said before unless there is "malice and intent" you got a sparring match no different than the war of two heavyweights on pay per view. I think the biggest farce on america is the idea that you can go to an MA school and learn Self defense. You can get confidence and break a board and know just about enough to get you really hurt. You guys with 30 years in the arts or even 15 look back at your own careers. Do you remember when you were young and thought you were really hot? If you could fight yourself at 20 with what you can do today 20 years later who would win? You can shorten the process that is what JKD is all about but you can't "make" people ready to defend themselves. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. She is married to a prominent, well-to-do businessman Mike Arroyo, a classmate of mine at the Ateneo. She has ably served in several prominent appointed and elected government positions, and enjoys the support of the intelligentsia, the Catholic Church, big business, and the "masa" (masses)--the antithesis of Estrada, a man known for his ignorance and excesses. It is ironic that Joseph "Erap" Estrada, former "action" star who rose to political prominence (from mayor of San Juan to Senator to President) as a fighter against crime, corruption and oppression of the downtrodden (again, the "masa"), ends up in disgrace for the moral turpitude he was supposed to be fighting. When asked if he was the Ronald Reagan of the Philippines, Estrada answered no, because he had better movies. What an opportunity for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, after a parade of despots, crooks and plain inept leaders in modern RP history. We wish her (and George W. Bush) the moral courage and intestinal fortitude to govern the country. ------------------------------ From: "Paul Rogers" Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 16:46:38 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Ray Terry in Inside Kung Fu magazine Congrats to our own Ray Terry, who is mentioned in Inside Kung Fu magazine (3/01 edition) in an article about Mike Inay (p. 18).
