Hi Achim I just returned from a workshop with Dr. Jopet Laraya of Oakville, Ontario. He currently heads the Lapunti Arnis de Abanico & Dragon-Tiger Kung Fu club of Toronto, Ontario. Born in Baguio City, Jopet has been involved in the martial arts for some time. He trained under Master Johnny F. Chiuten Jr. and Grandmaster Lao Kim, the legendary Old Man of Manila's Chinatown. He also trained with Grandmaster Filemon Caburnay (deceased), co-founder of the LAPUNTI ARNIS DE ABANICO style and his son, Grandmaster Prudencio Caburnay, present head of the system. Moving to Canada, he trained and still trains under Master James Lore of the JING MO KUNG FU CLUB located at the Chinese Community Center. Mark Wiley's new book, "Filipino Fighting Arts Theory & Practice", a continuation of his work from "Filipino Martial Culture", includes a segment on Lapunti Arnis de Abanico represented by Dr. Laraya. He is also a frequent contributor to Filipino Martial Arts magazine. I guarantee your friend will not be disappointed. Dr. Laraya along with Guro Manuel Bueno, Filipino Academy of Self-Defense (Arnis de Mano) of Charlteewtown, P.E.I. will also be sponsoring a workshop on April 21-22 & July 21-22, 2001. And I doubt we've got alot of black belt BJJ players stalking > people. I'm sorry, I can't recall who posted this statement, but I'll comment: I'm familiar with this move; we do some jujitsu takedowns and jointlocking type stuff in our system. As a 110 lb female, I just have to say "NO WAY". I *do not* want to have a bad guy in my guard, I do not want to go to the ground with a bad guy, and if I do get there, I am not interested in applying a straight arm bar...or any other joint lock. I am interested in getting him off me, and me up and running away as fast as possible. If it has gotten to the point where I am down on the ground on my back, it has gotten to the point where I will gouge the eyes, break fingers, grasp squeeze and tear groin/any other soft tissue and do anything else that will serve to get him distracted so I can heave him off me and go. Putting an armbar on the guy is *not* a "great option to have." While I do believe women should learn the basics of groundfighting in order not to panic in that situation, I don't think they should spend too much time on fancy maneuvers, unless they are interested in the sports/competition aspect of it. This is not to denigrate BJJ or any other type of grappling arts - this is simply the reality of being a small woman with a big dangerous man (usually) on top of you, who is probably going to try to punch you in order to make you "behave". Even if you can get the arm, if the attacker is very strong, or you've only trained the move a few times, it *will not be effective enough*. I've been thrown to the ground by large male friends in training , by request., including "emotional content" and the standard "spread the legs". I knew it was coming, he wasn't doing it very fast, I know how to properly apply a straight armbar etc. etc....and I still couldn't do it. Even assuming you can do all these things, and get the lock applied, then what? wait for someone to show up and help you? hold the guy in a lock indefinitly? Break the joint? hope he doesn't have a friend waiting around the corner? Well, if you can break the joint then perhaps you can then get up and escape...but it is not as easy as it may look, and it certainly is unlikely if you are untrained, not very strong, and not even mentally prepared. Not going to the ground at all is best; if it *does* happen, learning to fall properly, and not panic, and use *whatever is necessary* to get out of it, will provide a better chance than trying to do an armbar, or pass the guard, or any other technique which requires practice to do properly. Mental preparation, awareness, and a few basic and simple techniques & principles are much more useful. Note: I speak in the context of a woman being attacked by a man, but would like to point out that I think much of this applies equally well to men. Self-defense is about *everyone* - not just women. If you're a guy and you end up in a fight and down on the ground, it might be more evenly matched in certain respects, but what if the guy you're fighting has buddies....? no offense intended, all humble personal opinion jocelyne - Roaring Girl ------------------------------ From: "Johnaleen" Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 19:53:27 -0500 Subject: eskrima: re: 1) womens self defense 2) date rape 3) are woman smarter then men? Ok guys i have a question for you? how many men do you know that teach woman's self defense, have you heard cover date rape? and how to talk you way out of it? you know there are lots of ways to cover just that one situation and its one of the most common types of rape..... ok so your a chick and your held down and your with a date your telling him no no please stop,, you don't want to hurt him because he is a friend or someone you know... remember we are talking about what a Young untrained women is going to do and the things that will go though her mind in the circumstances and why date rape happens..... how many of you teachers out there advocate one way of getting him to stop for a minuet, without pissing him off is too tell him to be sure to use a condom because you have a venereal disease? the first time i said i had VD the other time i said i had aids...... and again both times it saved my young silly butt.... I was 17 and then 22 when these instances happened..... its one of the things i tell my young dating women to consider when there with a date and its gone too far...... why? because it worked for me as a young women, 2 times when i was at that dating collage age... and if it worked for me then it should be an option for others to think about and consider..... in one case it stopped the dude flat and he got out of the car and ran away.... the other instance it gave me enough time when he paused to get away...... small things like this are again part of what should be taught... including what too do physically once you have the dude stopped for a min and have that min to do something.... again i will say this...... we need to really consider what we teach to woman and how we teach it..... this is an overall package that should not be rushed and it should all be given too them in hard copy so they can remember it latter..... I read a comment made by one of you that woman are smarter then men...... Its not that woman are smarter then men its that woman think with both sides of there brain...... men don't. or so the medical community has recently reported..... why is that? One of the reason is that woman's rolls have been much more demanding then men's over the history of mankind..... we have to use both sides of the brain and we are most of the time filled with way too much stuff in our lives to commit to an art or think that we can because of all the commitments that we have to fill...... Women commit to things much differently then men do and most take the time to think about what they would take from there family's if they were to add more to there lives... things are changing yes, but if you go by history and what men's rolls were compared to Woman's rolls you will find that men's life's In General are spent doing 3 or 4 things... a woman on the other hand has always had to not only manage her personal life but the family's as well...... A woman's mind has been forced to developed this way because she has been forced to do way more then a man and the balancing act has made it part of there survival as a gender and devolvement mentally... with what it takes now in society for a women to work and still do all the rolls that she has done throughout history, with the family added to that, even more constraints have been put on her..... so giving your class structure with the details of what you taught a women in a class makes sense..... the average women manages to balance and do 4 times what a man dose in life and society...... again if your not willing too learn all the aspects of what your going to teach someone your doing them and yourself a huge dis-service... Chad can you provide morew details? >Kendal Hey Kendal, I'm not THE grappler around here, my knowledge is minimum, so if someone else around here can give a better explanation or some input, I'd look forward to it. BTW, I may have overrated a statement "interested in a great tactic to countering a rape assault" would be incorrect. There are alot more knowledgeable people on that matter here, so I'll leave that to them, but, knowledge of the guard is something I think would be good for women to know, if you are alone, and you are in that position already. With that said. One of the things that took me so long to actually start grappling was that no one explained it to me in a way that I found it interesting. And you do have to kind of understand grappling to be able to appreciate it from the outside or have a black belt tire than tap you out. Anyway, the guard places an attacker between your legs for you to start attacking him. A raper wants to be between a womens leg(most of the time). Instead of trying to fight and not let him get there, just giving him the position will put him in your guard. Couple of things here: 1. If he reaches down with one hand to undo his pants while supporting himself up with the other hand, this will give the other person the option of either an arm bar, a triangle, or a figure 4 on the arm. At least. Believe me, most of the time, the bodies natural reaction to an attempted arm bar will either be to get away or stick his head back between the legs. He goes away, he gets an arm bar. He comes in, he gets triangled. Of course these aren't "the truth techniques" and the secret doesn't lie in grappling, per se, or these techniques, but the actual application or principles of BJJ is for a weaker person to be able to fight an overpowered opponent between his legs. Another thing that it teaches you is being really comfortable to use your legs as weapons, even if you are not a kicker. This sets the person up for sweeps, face kicks, groing kicks...thats if he even got away from your other options. Once you have an understanding of the principles of ground positioning, you add two parts filipino martial art, one part knife, and half a cup of eye gouges/bites/pinches, you've got yourself a nice little ground game plan to begin working with in a real situation. 2. Same as above, except this time he kneels straight up and undoes his pants with both hands, BJJ has some very nice sweeps that will turn a man in this position to his back, where you can continue to attack or stand up and get your weapong of choice. Basically when men fight, we aim to get ontop of the guy to pummel him with punches, but the man on the bottoms game is to place the attacker between his legs. In a rape self defense situation, the woman wouldn't have to be highly skilled in retaining him between her legs because that is where the rapist would want to be. These are only a few options/choices, hope it helps. Maybe Ms. J can jump in on this with an opinion here? ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I own the Late TedLucaylucay's video on the pocket stick and thinks it is outstanding. Well worth the 39.00 and is still available I believe. The only draw back I can see is it is based on Kali/JKD style of fighting so most of it is Trapping and destruction's with a lot of the JKD wingchun style techniques, I don't know if that is a problem, but could be for someone with no experience with that style. but all in all a great tape, he also shows allot of the techniques with a Mini Mag flashlight not a bad idea for legal carry.. well I think is legal to carry. after dark anyway.. I have a question on Bahi wood. a friend went to the RP and I ask him to get me 2 sets of Bahi sticks, he has no idea what I was talking about so I wrote it down for him to pass around till he found some. He brought back 2 sets of sticks but I cant tell what kind of wood they are, they still have the skin ( husk) on, the only Bahi I have seen where husk Off, their not Rattan and feel VARY light. is their anyway to tell 1) if their Bahi or 2) what kind of wood they are?
