Self-defense is about *everyone* - not just women. If you're a guy and you end up in a fight and down on the ground, it might be more evenly matched in certain respects, but what if the guy you're fighting has buddies....?" That is the sort of comment that a man would often get crucified for. I for one have never understood how women's self defense differs from men's. The purpose surely is to stop being attacked and not to get hurt in the process without, hopefully, too much legal fallout later. While we are at it: Men's violence agains women is roundly condemned. Is men's violence against men allright? What about women's violence against men? The general impression one gets from the media is that the latter is something acceptable or even to be encouraged for whatever reason. The last statistics I saw for Canada showed the most frequent victim of violent crime to be a young male age 15-25. The chance of a male being attacked was 4 times greater than female, 8 times in a rural area. Reading Mr. MacYoung's recent post I suspect that he has a well defined view on this. Animal? Before doing that go and run up and down some stairs and then do the 100m as fast as you can. While you need to be able to deal with going to the ground on a few occasions will be advisable and in my experience as a doorman it was only to control in order to wait for help in detaining. Otherwise I always wanted to keep on my feet. Joint locking of course is a great tool but unless you have tried it before in a real life situation you will find it hard (imho) to ever be ready to exert the force required to make it work on an aggressive adversary. You have to snap the thing to get it on. Good to see Marc MacYoung giving out some great advice! As a 110 lb female, I just have to say "NO WAY". I *do not* want to have a bad guy in my guard, I do not want to go to the ground with a bad guy, and if I do get there..... ------------------------------ From: "jon broster" Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 04:03:59 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Mindboxing Hi Does anyone have any experience of the people at http://www.mindboxing.com Their adverts and website allude to their having some really good stuff; but is it true? Jon http://www.geocities.com/jonbroster ------------------------------ From: Bladewerkr@aol.com Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 07:56:13 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #40 Well, thanks for the input on the Women's self defense issue. When I was in college I had a professor that used to always start a lecture by defining terms that way we all understood what we are really discussing. The question was perhaps badly stated, so let mw try again. To my way of thinking there is avoidance which in any confrontation is the best way out. If you and your attacker are on different streets you win. This of course includes everything from awareness, the way a person carries themselves, to as some of my female students do, wearing a medical alert bracelet that says HIV positive. That is all well and good. That goes all the way up to making yourself hurl when grabbed, slobbering and talking to lampposts and God. What I am trying to get down the "that hasn't worked stage." There is the factor of a person having more confidence because they took a seminar, but a lot of time that's like a karate student that just got their yellow belt, it can get you hurt in the street. I have a real problem with not providing some form of reality training. An attacker is not going to offer you his arm so you can apply wrist lock #5 while saying please and thank you. I work with my senior female student who basically teaches the material, while I play the heavy. ( There are some who think that a woman's class should be all women I disagree, very few women rape other women at least outside the penitentiary). The problem I am trying to work through is that there seems to be some women who for whatever reason, whether spiritual, mental or physical, just can't get with the program. They choose to adapt a victim status. Has anyone come up with a way to turn the tables here? I have had some pretty good success, but it seems that the ones that succeed would probably do so anyway with or without any training. I know that I am somewhat obsessive about this issue, when I was 10 years old, my first cousin was brutally raped and tortured to death. I would do my best to make sure that no family ever has to go through that. So if anyone has found the key to motivate survival, please share it.
