"Rule-of-thumb" advice was that we should train the non-dominant side twice as much as the dominant. I sometimes train the non-dominant first, then the dominant, then the non-dominant again, trying to make the feel of execution the same as the dominant. Open the mind to the possibilities of unpredictable situations and it makes sense to consider that for example in dealing with more than one attacker we can't expect to be able to reorient ourselves positionally in any way that we choose during a fray. Makes sense that if we've got a good method to use from one orientation/lead that we might want to include it in the arsenal for fighting from the other lead. It might be faster and more reactive, for example, to be able to use a sweep equally well from either lead if the situation presents the opportunity and it might be the best thing to do ... likewise other "techniques". I doubt if that's w! orth as much as $0.02 but there it is :-) Be well, Mik __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/ ------------------------------ From: Alex France Date: 02 Feb 2001 11:57:37 -0800 Subject: eskrima: GM Ernesto Presas Teaches Both Right & Left In ED Vol 8, #065, Dieter writes: >>One of the biggest differences between Professor Remy Presas and Ernesto Presas is, that Remy is a leftie. Therfore he teaches the right and the left hand, where Ernesto only teaches the right hand. For example, in our Modern Arnis "Tapi-Tapi" drill (taught by Professor Remy Presas), something like flowsparring or sumbrada, we frequently change hands from right to left and back to right. Ernesto teaches something similar what he calls "freestyle", where he only teaches the right hand. I don t say that he soesn t know it, but he doesn t teach it, especially not in a drill.<< Dieter hasn't been with GM Ernesto for quite sometime now (a decade?), so perhaps things have changed; but I'm a leftie and he teaches me both right and left. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ASK... The best example of a leftie learning from him is his son. GM was the only teacher that Jan-Jan (Ernesto Jr) has had, and he is awesome when he does freestyle (drill and true freestyle) left-handed. Come to think of it, he's awesome right handed too... ------------------------------ From: "Corley, Nathan R" Date: Fri, 2 Feb 2001 12:06:45 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Machete attack in Elemetary school For entire story - visit http://www.nandotimes.com/nation/story/0,1038,500306062-500490803-503410464- 0,00.html *************************************** Nation: Man with machete goes on school rampage, authorities say The Associated Press FELTON, Pa. (February 2, 2001 2:48 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com) - A man wielding a machete and a baseball bat injured the principal and two other employees at an elementary school Friday, emergency officials said. A suspect was arrested about 20 minutes after the 11:30 a.m. attack at North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School in this south-central Pennsylvania town. The man was not immediately identified. The attacker chased the principal through the halls of the school, injuring her, a teacher and a third employee, said Patrick McFadden, executive director for York County Emergency Services. Also, a female student was taken to a doctor's office by a parent, McFadden said. He was unsure whether the child had been hurt or was just taken to a doctor to be checked out. One of the first 911 calls to police was from a woman hiding in the principal's office with the door locked and two children inside, McFadden said. The three injured women were taken to Memorial Hospital in York, a spokeswoman said. Principal Norina Bentzel, 41, had been slashed on her arm and hand, and Linda Collier, 52, a kindergarten teacher, also had her hand cut. A third school employee, a 33-year-old woman, had lesser injuries and was expected to be treated and released. Doors at the school, about 75 miles west of Philadelphia, are normally kept locked during classes. The man apparently entered the building behind a parent who was walking in, McFadden said. "We don't have any information regarding any motive for the incident at this time," McFadden said. Pupils were sent home after the attack. The school has an enrollment of 370. ------------------------------ From: Raphael Chiu Date: Fri, 2 Feb 2001 13:51:05 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: news story Does anyone have more info on this? (Reuters) - A man armed with a machete and a baseball bat went on a rampage at a Pennsylvania elementary school, injuring five children, two teachers and the principal, authorities said on Friday. The children -- four girls and a boy, all aged 5 or 6 -- received only slight injuries. But a kindergarten teacher was due to undergo surgery for lacerations to her hand, while doctors ordered the school's principal to be transferred by air ambulance to a hospital 50 miles away in Baltimore. York County Emergency Services received a call shortly after 11:30 a.m. from a panicked staff member at Winterstown Elementary School in Felton, who said a man with a large knife and a bat was chasing principal Norina Bentzel, 41, down a hallway. A second emergency call came minutes later from a teacher who had locked herself in Bentzel's office with two children. The suspect, who was not identified but who arrived on school grounds in a vehicle with out-of-state license plates, was reported in custody about 10 minutes later. There was no word on a motive for the attack, which officials said was carried out with a machete and a bat. Outer doors to the school building, which houses about 320 students and 50 teachers, are kept locked as a precaution. ``Our information is that he followed one of the parents inside the building,'' said York County Emergency Services executive director Patrick McFadden. A spokeswoman for Memorial Hospital in York, a city about 10 miles northwest of Felton, said Bentzel suffered extensive lacerations to her hands and would be flown to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Linda Collier, 52, the kindergarten teacher, was scheduled for surgery in York, while third-grade teacher Stacey Bailey, 33, was treated for minor injuries and released. The five injured children -- four 5-year-olds and one 6-year-old -- were treated for minor cuts at another nearby hospital. __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Doing assymetrical figure 8s with opposing limbs and such.
